Well it is doing winter testing now, we still have 6mths before TMS, and even if it get's unveiled in 98% ready production form it will take 3-4mths for the production to kick off, while fine tuning and testing still continues in the background. following this it will be at least 2-3mths for the first cars to arrive into dealerships. This basically, as a best case scenario, puts first deliveries in Apr-May 2018.

BMW press release is saying 2018

The aforementioned World Premiere BMW Concept vehicle also previews a new model that will come to market in 2018. The World Premiere BMW Concept will have its only North American public showing on the Concept Lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday August 20th.

@gymratter, This autonews time line would make more sense if they were talking model year not calendar year. I still think the car will come out in 2018 as a 2019 model, but who knows.

perhaps but everything in the 2017 & 2018 columns is spot on if we go by calendar year...and if the start of production is in Nov 2018 like in the picture @vb22 posted then a full launch in 2019 looks to be inevitable. this would also explain why the publications covering the potential pebble beach & tokyo auto show reveals later this year keep referring to them as concepts instead of debuts like we were hoping. maybe another concept since the platform is different from what the FT1 originally envisioned?

For years now there has been much discussion about the resurgence of the legendary Toyota Supra. I've been interested and more than excited about the forthcoming Supra. I'm as giddy as a kid awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus at Christmas time but losing patience which is quickly turning into frustration. The first thing I do every morning after waking up is to check various automotive news websites hoping to find information regarding the Supra.

For starters, shame on Toyota for ditching sports cars as well as their loyal sports car enthusiast in favor of Crossovers and SUV's. Basically turning their backs on us, the sports car enthusiast who were very loyal to them. Remember the Toyota Celica, the Celica All-Trac in particular, the Toyota MR-2 and the legendary Toyota Supra. Sports car enthusiast loved those cars and loved Toyota for developing and producing them.

Since the introduction of the Toyota FT-1 concept it has taken forever for the Supra to go into development and production. Now that it's being developed with BMW all we've seen are those pre-production test units running around covered in camouflage. Okay that's cool. We can deal with that. But everyone in the car media industry and practically every sports car enthusiast was expecting to see a pre-production example of the forthcoming Supra at the most recent Tokyo Motor Show sans all the camouflage. But no. No sight of the sports car that many of us dream about at the Tokyo Motor Show, not even a mention of the Supra despite the fact that the Tokyo Motor Show would have been the perfect venue to preview the forthcoming Supra.

I'm a sports car enthusiast who's never owned a Supra and can not wait to join the Supra owners club. I've owned numerous sports cars and am currently a BMW aficionado having owned several BMW's. I cancelled my order for a new BMW M2 and held onto my BMW M235i in anticipation of the forth coming Supra and was fully expecting to see it at the Tokyo Motor Show. Currently BMW is developing an M2 Competition which will be produced in a limited low number volume making it rare. Mercedes is updating the C63 AMG with a face-lift. Don't get me wrong I want my Supra but can not just sit around and wait forever. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. Toyota should give us die-hard fans/future buyers a taste of a tease of this forthcoming car but to give us nothing to hold us over until it's arrival is just plain unacceptable and not to mention cruel. Many of us could care less about the cost of forthcoming Supra and are willing to pay whatever Toyota's asking pricing for them is. In the very least Toyota could and should give us a teaser shot of the forthcoming Supra since they are accustomed to doing it with new Crossovers and new SUV's.

In closing, I sincerely hope there is some concrete information on the forthcoming Supra available soon. The frustration I am feeling is a negative feeling that I normally do not allow into my life. I'm a positive upbeat person who enjoys living a positive lifestyle which generally results in positive experiences. If there is no concrete information released on the Supra soon I'll have no choice other than purchase another BMW, the forthcoming BMW M2 Competition.

1st world problem much? if they don't come out with the supra soon you'll go for a bmw? lol..yes that is really sticking it to them....and btw, fact is out of all the economy brands toyota has had by far the most extensive sports car offerings yet no one was buying them, only a handful of people actually purchased any of the jdm legends (nsx/tt supra/3000gt/rx7).

Toyota has always taken the "Polyphony Digital" approach to their new projects and this is no different. Every single step that the Toyota development team makes is carefully calculated and backed by hundreds of hours of analysis and testing. They are working day in-day out to make the best car according to their image, so why should we care if it takes a while? It's been 20 years, whats another few?

If you really need/want a new sports car, then get one. I'm sure you'll really enjoy an M2 and maybe even forget the Supra ever existed. Or maybe the Supra will be so amazing, you'll sell your Bimmer off for 1/2 it's MSRP to put a down payment on a Toyota. :confused1:

The rest of us will happily sit here for another few years, having fun with wacky photoshops and occasionally-outlandish rumors, because we know Toyota doesn't mess around when it comes to sports cars. :dunno:

Right now, your best hope for any more official news from Toyota on the new Supra is going to be Detroit, NAIAS, in January. That's where they launched FT1, so there could be some hope of a return.

The most recent report I read on a timetable was "end of 2019." That's at least two years away. Realistically, maybe even 3 years before you and I have a shot at buying a car.

I don't know about you, but IMO either way you cut it, that's a tremendous amount of time to wait for what, if I'm being honest, is sounding more and more like it will be a very average sportscar offering. It's like we're in 1999 and we're eagerly waiting for the 350Z to hit in 2002. Except these days there's way more options on the market to choose from.

And this is coming from someone who has been a mkV supra superfan since the FT1 dropped in January of 2014.

if money is not an issue maybe a GTR could be considered , it's a car that really continues the legacy of the skyline gtrs of the past and it is hellish fast.

If you limit yourself to RWD sportscars and exclude hot hatches, pony cars, and coupes/sedans like the M235i, there really are few comparable cars to go to if you can't wait (at least for the lower-end variant of the Supra). The BRZ/86 and Miata have far less power; the Corvette, Jag F type, and Cayman are all considerably more expensive. About the only rough equivalent is the 370Z in its upper trims, and that is very old tech.

Price range was initially disclosed in the FT1 interviews to be $50,000-$60,000. I believe the latest details from A70 on this forum are also along those lines.

On the market right now, I'd say best comparisons in the price range would be the BMW M2, Shelby GT350, base model Cayman, base Corvette. Maybe even a Grand Sport vette or a Cayman S with typical discounts. I also wouldn't include most of the other stuff like sedans or hatches. A compelling argument could also be made for certain trims of the Camaro or even Mustang GT but I wouldn't cross shop them myself.

By the time this car comes out, each one of those comparison models will likely be new and improved, or at least facelifted, in some form or fashion.
