worst case scenario they cheapen out and pull a 86/BRZ. but BMW interiors aren't that bad, would rather have a Bimmer interior vs a Subaru :p
The 86 interior is not a Subaru designed interior. It may have Subaru parts and it might have some plastic in there (not as much as people try to complain about) but that is only because Subaru and Toyota use many of the same suppliers and at the end of the day like all sports cars under $30 K, it isn't going to have all soft touch materials. The design is very Toyota because Subaru was just there for engineering..circular air vents, tach in the center, dash layout, etc..just compare all the Subaru interiors with 86 and you'll see they don't look anything alike.

not so much the air vents, but everything else looks subaruish to me. kinda a mash up between the new and old Impreza.

so...where are these similarities you are talking about? I guess because they are all black, use three knobs for the HVAC and have a center console? Lol.

Plus, why are you looking at the base version, it is just a parts bin for the HVAC area..

yes i was referring the center console. but the design of the gauges have a similar layout to the old Impreza no?

Toyota's interior have a different look IMO.

BMW-Says-Manuals-And-DCTs-Will-Die-1-.jpg

The vice-president of sales and marketing for BMW’s M division says that both manual and dual clutch transmissions will die out.

The imminent death of the manual transmission has been coming for years and shouldn’t surprise anyone, however Peter Quintus’ belief that DCTs are also on the way out might shock a few people.

While speaking to Drive, Quintus said that the advantage of quicker shifts dual-clutch transmissions once had over traditional automatic gearboxes are dwindling.

“It's more a question of how long has the DCT got to go. How long will it last? We are now seeing automatic transmissions with nine and even 10 speeds, so there's a lot of technology in modern automatics.”

“The DCT once had two advantages: it was light and its shift speeds were higher. Now, a lot of that shift-time advantage has disappeared as automatics get better and smarter,” Quintus said.

The executive also revealed he isn’t sure if the next-generation M3 or M4 will have the option of a manual transmission.

torque converted autos have indeed become very good but I would be quite sad if the Supra wasn't a DCT...seeing that none of the mules so far have had a stick I'm not holding my breath for one..

I know BMW has been saying this for some years now, mainly about manuals but this is the first I see regarding DCT's as well. Really hoping they wait until after this project to share both Manual + DCT with the upcoming Supra. I believe Getrag is BMW's transmission supplier. Getrag supplied that bullet proof V160 6-speed manual transmission on the MKIV Supra.

If no true manual option or DCT will be available, I think the future of fun would be a manual sequential gearbox. A rumor a few years back was that Toyota was working on one. I guess we'll see.

DCT or bust.

If they can actually get an automatic to make a crisp, instant shift when I pull a paddle, then maybe I'd consider it. But right now nothing beats a dual clutch box.

Torque converters are almost bulletproof. They can handle much more torque than a DCT. DCT are more complex and difficult to repair. Sounds to me that BMW is choosing the CHEAP route with a statement re: DCT on borrowed time.

It's bad enough to place an automatic into a sportscar instead of a manual. Don't take away the DCT.

A reliable and fast shifting 7,8, 9 or 10-speed modern torque converter automatic with paddle-shifters would be good enough for road and track. IMO.

The Camaro ZL1 10 speed automatic is getting plenty of high praise from automotive journalists on how responsive the transmission is (and having faster shift speeds than the Porsche PDK DCT):

sure, but if they put a torque converter then it will be another small facepalm for this Toyota/BMW "partnership"..they probably won't give us a manual but you would be cool with a 10 speed non-DCT which they have already developed with Aisin for the Lexus LC...

I've read that the LC500 has to constantly hunt for gears with its 10 speed Aisin automatic which is a big no-no. The 10 speed automatic being used on the Camaro ZL1 apparently doesn't have this issue based on very good programming. The ZL1 torque converter transmission hides its torque-converter based identity very well by not bringing out the typically flaws of a non-DCT auto transmission.

If the BMW-Toyota partnership also produces a torque-converter transmission with the same performance output/characteristics found on the Camaro ZL1 slush-box, it would end up performing the same as a DCT and have the reliability of a torque-converter auto, the best of both worlds.
