Some exciting GR86 news from Bestcar! (Oct 25th 2022)

https://bestcarweb.jp/news/scoop/535278

Via Google Translate:

Oh... Was it moving!! New GR86 development information catch The next leading role in 2025 is made by Toyota

The other day, Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ caused rumors on SNS that "order stop" and "current model production end". The current model, the second generation, just appeared last year.

Regarding such GR86/BRZ, our editorial department obtained information that "development of the next model has begun". Is the next model !?? Seriously?? Will it be a gasoline version?? Or will it be a HV?? I got it , so I'll deliver it!

■ 300ps over 1.6L turbo + hybrid Of course, FR continues

Shocking information came in from a certain route.

As for how shocking it was, there were a series of warning voices within the editorial department saying, "Is this true?

It's rare for the best car editorial department, who usually picks up on scoop stories lightly, to say, "Wait a minute."

It was a surprising piece of information, but fortunately, they succeeded in backing it up. Now I can confidently deliver it to my readers.

Announce! The development of the next GR86 has started!

Turbo hybrid power unit! The engine is a GR Yaris 3-cylinder 1.6L turbo!

Super fresh information that is not enough no matter how many "!" I'm most curious, what about over there? Hi, FR continues properly! Don Don Don Puff Puff Puff~!

I was too excited. From now on, she will calmly pass on the information.

It is said that the next GR86 is currently at the stage where the basic framework has been decided. A testbed with a power unit mounted on the chassis has been completed, and full-scale testing is about to begin.

As mentioned above, the engine uses the 3-cylinder 1.6L turbo installed in the GR Yaris.

The GR Yaris has a spec of 272ps/37.7kgm, and the next generation GR86 should also have similar figures.

However, the new part of the next GR86 is to hybridize this turbo engine.

Although the details are unknown, it is expected to be a new hybrid system installed in the new crown 2.4L turbo car.

This system is directly connected to the engine and features a more direct driving experience than the conventional THS (Toyota Hybrid System).

The new crown is called "dual boost hybrid" because the front is driven by the engine and motor, and the rear is driven by "eAxle", but the GR86 is planned as a car that drives only the rear wheels, so it is called "dual". Instead, it says "single".

It is certain that the combined system output of the engine and motor will exceed 300ps, and it is likely to display 320-330ps.

In addition, the test bed uses the current type transmission and differential, but it seems that it does not have the capacity to withstand over 300ps.

The current transmission is made by Aisin, but it seems that they will prepare a new transmission while considering overseas suppliers.

There is no clear information, but since it is a GR86, a 3-pedal MT is essential. It is expected that they will continue to be used. The basic concept remains the same.

what about the platform? It is said that the next model will use Toyota's platform, which has changed from Subaru's platform, which continued from the first to second generation (current model). Specifically, the FR floor of the Lexus IS will be shortened and adopted.

Toyota and Lexus cars are switching to models made with TNGA technology one after another, but IS with an old design year is an old platform.

This is because TNGA's GA-L platform for FR is designed for large size models and cannot be used for cars below the D segment.

However, as is well known, the IS received a large-scale improvement in the 2020 minor change and dramatically improved the feel of the ride.

Even if the platform is the same, if you introduce TNGA technology and improve it, it will prove to be more than sufficient even now.

It is certain that the next GR86 will evolve further, and it will demonstrate its ability as expected.

■ Under development aiming for debut in 2025

Let's organize the information so far.

- Development of the next GR86 has already started.
●The power unit is a 3-cylinder 1.6L turbo + motor hybrid.
● Evolve and adopt the Lexus IS platform, and continue the FR layout.

In other words, the next GR86 will be a car completely made by Toyota's engineering.

The first and second generations were planned and designed by Toyota, and designed and developed by Subaru. will do.

The reason for this is not clear, but the horizontally opposed engine cannot meet the fuel efficiency regulations that will become more stringent in the future, and Subaru's SGP (Subaru Global Platform) does not have a FR version, so it may have been decided that it would be difficult to create a new one. Maybe.

In any case, the next model will be made under the initiative of Toyota.

What will happen to Subaru's BRZ? Although there is no clear information at this time, it is natural to think that the GR86 and BRZ will be lined up as siblings, even if the roles of the two companies change.

Also, just like the current model, the difference in setup will make the two companies' cars with different running characteristics.

I'm also curious if an electric vehicle (BEV) will be available at this time of year, but the information is that there are no plans for this, and it is highly likely that this will be the last GR86/BRZ.

Sports cars will be developed even in the era of BEV, but the GR86/BRZ will end with the next model.

Development has begun with the aim of line-off in 2025. If the debut in 2025 can be realized, the current model that appeared in 2021 will be replaced in just four years. It's unusually short in recent years, but it's probably partly to accommodate various regulations that are planned in the future.

Many sports cars such as GT-R and GR Supra are expected to be discontinued in 2025. Even under such circumstances, GR86 is aiming for the next. For car lovers, there is nothing that makes me happier than this. I hope the development goes smoothly!

February 22nd 2023 Bestcar update on the 3rd generation Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ:

In the movement toward decarbonization, there are concerns about the continuation of pure engine sports. The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ are one of them, but they are said to be under development as a 1.6L turbo + hybrid with the aim of appearing in 2025!

■ The next 86 is a 1.6L turbo HV with over 300ps!!

Aiming to debut in 2025, the next-generation 86/BRZ is already under development. In contrast to the current model, which was developed mainly by Subaru, it is said that development is being led by Toyota (anticipated CG created by the best car editorial department)

As the movement toward decarbonization progresses, there are concerns about the continuation of pure engine sports. One of them is the GR86, but there are plans for the next model, and development has already begun.

And the development system will change in the next model. Both the first generation and the current model have been made with Subaru's horizontally opposed engine and platform, but the next model will be developed with Toyota's engineering.

The current plan is to combine the engine with a 1.6L 3-cylinder turbo of GR Yaris or GR Corolla with a 2-clutch 1-motor hybrid system. Of course, the drive system inherits FR. It is information that the platform will adopt the Lexus IS for FR with a short wheelbase.

A test bed with a power unit installed in the chassis has just been completed, and full-scale development is still to come.

The next model will survive with electrification, but the point is to make it hybrid. The hybrid is directly connected to the engine, which is used in the new crown crossover, etc., and is characterized by the ability to enjoy driving with a sense of directness.

The 1.6L turbo, which produces 272ps in the GR Yaris, is further improved in power performance by the hybrid motor assist, and is compatible with fuel efficiency. It seems to be a power unit suitable for next-generation sports.

At the same time, the Subaru BRZ is also planned to be renewed. Debut is expected in 2025.

●Toyota New GR86 Expected specs:

・Height: 1300mm
・Wheelbase : 2600mm
・Vehicle weight: 1350kg
・Power unit: 1.6L, direct 3DOHC + turbo + motor
・Maximum output/maximum torque: 272ps/37.7kgm
・System maximum output: 320-330ps
・Transmission: 6MT/6AT
・Estimated price: 4-4.5 million yen

Makes sense. They were testing the current GR86 with the yaris engine. I'd prefer no hybrid to not have to worry about the battery and its longevity. But that power level means the Supra must be getting more powerful as well.

300+ doesn’t matter if it looks like this. If the Supra survives for a MKVI I’ll be extremely let down if they do something like this to the Supra’s design.

They could be pumping up power on the GR86 early due to plans to dump the Supra from the lineup also. Just a thought.

I think the design will change a bit when it makes it to production. Bestcar got close with their initial GR Corolla renderings but even those were a bit too rounded and lacking in definition compared to the final production cars.

These guess renderings still looks decent enough for now so early on in development. The rumored GR Celica EV renderings also have a similar too rounded appearance that will undoubtedly be different once the real deal comes out.

But... yes, this rendering doesn't look nearly as good as the gorgeous 2022+ GR86 or the beautiful Supra MKV. Somehow I do not think Toyota is going to suddenly forget how to do styling right when so far they have been nailing it with each distinct GR model (Yaris, Corolla, 86 and Supra).
