My thoughts here are... they're focusing on a two-door coupe layout? And with a new performance AWD system? For an STI two-door variant reminiscent of the 1998 22B STI?

And Tetsuya Tada has said before that he'd like to see the Celica GT-Four come back?

This would strongly suggest that if Toyota is actually co-developing the next WRX STI then they could very well also be developing in that partnership the next Celica GT-Four / All-Trac.

...in addition to the 2nd gen GT86, current A90 Supra and rumored electric/hybrid mid-powertrain MR2.

That would make "three brothers" +1.

In addition to the GR Super Sport, but that brother never visits

Here's an old article from 2008 that rather echoes this rumor of Toyota and Subaru co-developing a WRX STI and new Celica GT-Four with an STI boxer engine at the heart of it.

https://www.caradvice.com.au/9998/toyota-planning-celica-gt-four-revival/

If you think about it the way the 3S-GTE's were always set up was to have an air-to-air or air-to-water intercooler mounted on top of the engine... just the way Subaru has always done it with their boxer engines.

Packaging-wise this would allow for one of the short and low FA engines to let Toyota design a low hood-line for a two-door coupe/hatch chassis larger in design and intent than the GT86/BRZ but compact and low enough to fit the bill. Joining forces on the AWD system's design also seems like a no-brainer as does Subaru's need to retain a the beefy STI 6-speed manual transmission for their racing efforts. Toyota can also throw in whatever torque vectoring and Torsen LSD technology they would want to.

Subaru gets their halo 2-door STI and Toyota gets their rally hero GT-Four with different styling.

First thing first, IDK anything bout next gen WRX or STI... but here are some questions it always comes up w these rumors and articles.
  1. Motor1 claim next STI have come w FA24DIT, but is that worldwide? or US only? In Japan, top STI model come w EJ20 and not EJ25 like US. Feels like Motor1 not seeing worldwide view. They saw Accent having FA24DIT, so they assume having next STI will have FA24DIT.
  2. I do love to see coupe WRX come back... but chances are very slim. Why Subaru wanna kill the sale of BRZ (coupe) and WRX (turbo AWD) off? For fans, it make sense... but for consumers, it doesn't.
  3. Do love to see Celica GT-FOUR come back, but currently Toyota is pushing more on Yaris/Corolla GR-FOUR, so won't see it for a while.
  4. Not sure Subaru gonna let Toyota touch their main face of their brand. BRZ, it's not really Subaru to have boxer engine RWD car, so it's fine, but WRX have been around since '92. Don't think Subaru gonna say "Okay, it's do co-develop next WRX!"
That's just my 2yen

yeap indeed the fa24 is not worldwide , i haven't seen any in europe too , here they have the 2.5 liter hybrid mostly. But the wrx sti has the ej25 and it is the only model with that engine here.

About the toyota rumours and 2 door yea i am calling BS also , but maybe the possibility of a 400hp STI could be more than 0% at least.

This is a very pragmatic guess on my part but if the next STI were to get 400hp stock it might come in the form of a hybrid of some design. Not like a Prius mind you but something like what it is now but with electric motor boost set into the driveline calibrated for the extra power first and eco anything (other than lowered CO2 emissions and better fuel economy) being the byproducts.

It would be really nice to have one more pure gas-turbo STI though.

I’m just thinking this might be a possibility because Subaru with their all-AWD lineup (save the BRZ) and use of turbos in mostly just sports models now... and their switch to CVTs in non-sports models for improved fuel economy... and their sharing some of Toyota’s electric R&D... they have a tougher time meeting required fleet average emissions and fuel economy compared to the much larger automaker that is Toyota.

But I’d love a 3-door 22B style purist next gen STI.

As for a new Celica GT-Four coupe, that would be awesome too. As aggressive as the ST205 would be the standard. But so far that doesn’t appear to be a priority now that we’ve got the Yaris GR and Corolla GR.
