The father of the Toyota Supra speaks: "It will drive like a videogame"

Tetsuya Tada, project leader of the new Japanese sports expected in 2019: "We have been working for 6 years to create an exceptional cornering and exciting car. I saw the movie Fast and Furious and I loved it ... "

It will look bad as a "Fast and Furious" car and will give driving sensations from videogames. Word of Tetsuya Tada, head of the project of the new Toyota Supra, highly anticipated heir to one of the most iconic and recognizable sports models ever created. In Japan they have been working for 6 years and the debut is expected for the beginning of 2019.

The base was developed in common with that of the BMW Z4. But, as Tada explains, the philosophy that guided this collaboration has little in common with the one created at the time together with Subaru for the birth of the GT86 and the BRZ. " Compared to the past, we started from the goals we had in mind and only later tried what elements could be shared with BMW, which in turn had other targets for the Z4, " explains Tada.

The new Supra will be powered by a 6-cylinder engine and will have rear-wheel drive. " While we are thinking about a possible hybrid version ". Top secret the power. " It was not our main concern - continues Tada -. There are already 1000 hp supercars on the market. Instead, the idea was to create a car that had exceptional handling and could be used in cornering by most drivers. The real Supra will be as exciting as that of the Gran Turismo videogame ".

And the line? Tada refers to the film Fast and Furious: " I saw the film and I liked it. Our Supra will have an equally spectacular aesthetic impact ". The reference market will once again be that of the United States, while the production numbers are not yet established. Of course there will be a job in Motorsport. " We have received many requests to play various championships. The Japanese Super GT (where the Lexus brand now competes) should obviously be an ideal showcase ".

The Supra 2019 is destined to become a myth for enthusiasts. And Tada confirms: " When we completed the GT86 project, I thought we had done our best. This Supra instead will go much further. The driving experience will count more than any description. There are many important supercars in the world. Ferrari and Lamborghini are pieces of art. But, speaking as an industrial engineer, then I must say that the reference to which I am inspired is the Porsche ".

Sounds good to me Tada san, now can we drive it please? :D

Seriously though, the descriptions that Tada san gives in these interviews are pretty on point with what (I think) most of us want. Just wish there was some hard numbers to go along with it.

So much PR, so little substance.
Gods of racing, give us patience.

I like this quote. I just wish I could understand how a manual transmission does not fit in with this description.

GTRs were compared with video games and it was a bad aspect of the car as it was tech and no skill involved type of car.

Tada comparing this car to the video game actually worries me.

I feel like there's something lost in translation here lol; with the Fast and Furious thing too lmao.

Also, I just want to say, I'm about the farthest thing from a Nissan fan, but the GTR has loads of feel IMO. Steering is great and the chassis really loves to be thrashed. The only thing that feels unrealistic about it is how it can be so agile despite the mass, and that's just impressive. I used to hate on the car for the whole "video game" BS stuff before too, then I drove one and it really changed my tune.

Anyways, yeah, pretty sure Tada-san meant something else, whatever that may have been lol.

On point about the GTR... they do drive well. However.. at TX2K18.. we witnessed a first time driver at a drag strip.. run a 8 second pass in his first ever time down the track. Skill is absolutely not required with a GTR.

I hope this upcoming Supra is not like that.. fast is fun. But.. fast without working for is meh.. don’t care for that.

Yeah that's fair. AWD plus automatic box indeed does make it very accessible. Supra will be RWD, and hopefully have a mechanical LSD, so hopefully it'll be scary when you need it to be lol. FWIW my brother's Giulia QV is a similar formula, ZF8 and 500hp TT V6, and it's scary af to drive with traction off lol. That thing will absolutely bite you because it makes way too much low end torque and the 80TW Pirellis take ages to warm up lol. Absolute joy to thrash on though, that chassis is a masterclass. I'll most def be doing a comparison of those two cars when the Toyota starts dishing out press vehicles.

But yeah, as long as there's RWD, a good diff, and an off button for the aids, I think we'll be okay!

there's skill required in drag racing??? there's no corners?! :p :p
Lol. I’m sure you can cut a 1.0 60ft every time in a manual vehicle.. if not.. try it and come back and report back how well your skill was. :)
