Like I said, it would help keep cost down. I'd also like if Toyota played a bit in the hatch market but I feel that they have no business in it. If they were to go in and try to take the consumers out of the competition's pocket, they would have to go back and keep doing new things instead of up-keeping the models already there at a lowered cost and calling it a day. The other companies would be doing the same and might go overboard just so they don't get overtaken by Toyota. Food for thought.
RWD Toyota hatch?

They do have a GR Hatch in Europe which I think is arguably the biggest hatch market. Wouldn't mind it if Tada san got involved int hatches too

Did not realize this little bugger was that quick in a straight line. How about a circuit test carwow?

What kind of sports car is the third one going to be, in your opinion?
If the 86 is the middle of the 3 sports car brothers, then the Supra is the top, the 3rd brother is probably going to be at the bottom, which means least expensive. In my opinion, Toyota is going to revive the MR2, probably in a tie-up with Mazda. It should be cheaper than $27,000.

S-FR sounds interesting. Toyota had already debuted a concept version a few years back. Though the S-FR sounds something like the FR-S, which was the previous name of the 86. There was no history with the S-FR. If the 86 got its name from AE86, and Supra from previous Supras, I believe Toyota will revive a previous model. That’s instant marketing, especially if there were lots of fans of the previous model, just like the Supra MkIV. MR2 looks like the closest in terms of size, and pricing. So I think the 3rd sports car will be the MR2, or S-FR, since the FR-S is no more.

Old interview, but a good read.

S-FR developer
SPECIAL INTERVIEW
  • KazuoMoriSports Vehicle Control DivisionKAZUO MORI
  • KOICHI MATSUMOTODesign Department Koichi Matsumoto
Experience in cart racing is being utilized in S - FR!

First of all, please tell me the career that the two will be in charge of S-FR.

Kazuo MoriSports Vehicle Control Department

photo1.jpg

I joined the company in 1986 and initially was in charge of the Lancrard frame and suspension for about 5 years with chassis design. After that, I did experiment only for a moment, but after that I was in charge of product planning. After being in charge of the first generation Ipsum, Gaia, the 2nd generation Estima, 2nd generation Siena for North America, after 3rd generation, I became a chief engineer in Siena. In that sense, in product planning we will have been a "minivan life". After that, in 2010 I moved to the Sports Vehicle Control Division. I was doing the race at private, so to people around me "It was good! After taking charge of the iQ GRMN supercharger etc. at the Sports Vehicle Control Department, I was in charge of S-FR.

Design DepartmentKoichi Matsumoto

I joined the company in 1988, initially responsible for the 7th generation Corolla, the Corolla family also got a lot of variations because there were many destinations. After that, he is also in charge of 11th crown and Altezza. After that, I moved to R & D department, I was in charge of prior development of design of motor show model and branding / design strategy, and also launched domestic Lexus. After that, I was in charge of the preliminary project, I met Mr. Mori with S-FR.

In other words, the two of you were never in charge of sports cars at all?

Woods

I agree. Although I have done various things so far, in reality no contact point with Mr. Matsumoto was.

Matsumoto

I knew the existence of Mr. Mori. There was something called "Siena's transcontinental North American Continent Project", but Mori came to talk about design at that time. "Is something weird strange?" (Laugh).

photo3.jpg

By the way, have you heard that both of you are being racing karts?

Woods

The race history is quite long. By the way, I went out for a course race with a cart race that I participated the other day. Actually the avalan bone has broken (lol)

Matsumoto

I was doing at the time of the student, but when I did "camp" to study the concept of S - FR, I resumed knowing that Mr. Mori is doing a cart, now it is the same team.

photo4.jpg

Great echo at Tokyo Motor Show
However, there was a continuation!

I announced the S - FR at the Tokyo Motor Show, but I heard that there was a huge response. Mr. Matsumoto heard live voice at the scene, what kind of evaluation was it?

Matsumoto

What impressed me is that a lot of people said "It's finally the car I want from Toyota." There were many other questions saying "Are you sure you are not?" A person who asked me at least as an explanatory person was a 100% positive opinion.

Woods

To tell the truth, there is a doubt that "Is there really a receptionist for entry sports?" However, there was a feeling that "Receiving dishes are shocking!", "We are seeking such cars!", In an echo that greatly exceeds our imagination.

photo5.jpg

However, 86 Toyota already has a lineup of FR Sports, right?

Woods

Also in the company I was told that "How about making mini 86?" Therefore, what we said from the beginning was "Vitz of FR inconvenient FR". A person who comes to buy a hatchback is "what is this?" I wonder if the low threshold is good.

Matsumoto

If it was a style that shook like a sports car, it would go a step further down to "a little bit for me." So, S - FR is not a "sports car entry" but a "car entry" recognition. Even if the entrance is not a sports car, you can change it as "you are having a lot of fun with cars", "when you use it is sports."

The simple and familiar S-FR
transforms into a sporty & fearless image!

The basis of such S-FR is "S-FR Racing Concept" which we announced at the Tokyo Auto Salon. I think that it is a new proposal of S - FR, but what is the development concept?

Woods

From the moment S - FR was issued at the Tokyo Motor Show, "I thought that because it is good, I thought that it would be a different thing to be surprised if I customized it." So we developed S - FR Racing Concept by expressing a different world feeling. Because S - FR stands better for pillar standing, I think that it is finished in a more sporty style by adding CFRP made large aero parts and over fenders.

I think that it is a fearless image against S-FR. However, it is hard to understand the size feeling when it is a picture (sweat).

Woods

Same as S - FR, but there are many opinions saying, "The real thing is better than in the picture". I can understand well when I put Vitz aside (laugh).

Matsumoto

By the way, the basic body is exactly the same as the S - FR, with only the entire width overfender, it has expanded by 20 mm on each side + (1695 → 1735 mm). The tire also wears a large size accordingly. The total height has also been greatly lowered from 1320 to 1270 mm.

photo6.jpg

S - FR is a simple and friendly style of attachment, but with S - FR Racing Concept?

Matsumoto

The design of S-FR expresses the simplicity without trends and the goodness of the contents (= FR). If you use the feature to lower the car height and expand the full width, will it be cooler? It is a pure idea.

When I saw it, I felt like the modern version of the KP 61 Starlet and the AE86 race car. Just adding a little effort to a simple model will transform it into such a fearless and sporty model.

Woods

That's exactly what I want. By the way, if you are an uncle's generation, do not you think there is a thing coming in (laugh). A big wing on a big model such as Nissan GT - R or Lexus RC F ... saying that young people are familiar with it, I think that it might be fresh if it is a compact model.

Powertrain is equipped with turbo If
base features are good you can do anything !?

Is it a model exclusively for racing, to say the racing concept?

Woods

Rather, it is one of the proposals for showing the world feeling that "S - FR can do various things! The reason to show off this car at the Tokyo Auto Salon is that the S-FR has a desire to "enjoy it as a customized model" and "I have drawers according to various uses" . With the S - FR and the S - FR Racing Concept, the user may also say that some people say "I want to do it, want to do this!"

In other words, let's imagine the user by imagining a normal S-FR and an unusual S-FR Racing Concept.

Woods

Although I can use various ways, I wanted to show the part that it is OK to extraordinary. In an old word, is it like an image like "a wolf with sheep's skin?"

photo7.jpg

By the way, there is no details about powertrain this time, but what kind of thing are you imagining?

Woods

S-FR talked to automobile media, "High power type NA engine with power weight ratio of 6 kg / PS ideal ideal", but S-FR is an image to add a supercharger to it.

Matsumoto

I can see the intercooler properly in the back of the front mask (laugh).

In other words, do you want to include performance that matches your appearance?

Woods

That's right.

I can not "lid" for what I want to respond to customers' voice !
After the Tokyo Motor Show, I think that a big response will come out even at the Tokyo Auto Salon?

Woods

I think that various opinions will come out. We need to rethink what we do with the base, but personally I would like to conclude that "I was good in that direction."

Although I am interested in saying that there is a proposal to continue with the Tokyo Motor Show and Tokyo Auto Salon. I think that certainly 86 also underwent similar circumstances?

Woods

I can not say detailed things, but the only thing I can say is that manufacturers can not easily cover the things customers say "I want it!"

It seems that many presidents Tadashi Toyoda also said that many people are looking forward to "S-FR."

Matsumoto

I heard that people from other manufacturers praised variously.

Woods

As long as the car still exists, I think that the cars saying "Keep close at hand as an entry", "put it close as a hobby" and "put it closer for customization" will not change many years. Since I am in the Tokyo Auto Salon near the car for 3 days, I would like to hear various opinions and suggestions from car lovers.
