Great video, it demonstrated perfectly why the Supra name means so much today....bc of the A80. Lol! I didn’t hear one A60 or A70 owner in that clip say anything about their cars contributing to the cult following.

This car better live up to the MKIV Supra....or it will see the same fate as the FJ Cruiser.

If it will get the axe in the future like the FJ Cruiser, its value will only appreciate.

Another great point that you completely missed. There will be nothing special about it this time, even in limited quantity run. It’s just a Z4 and 90% if not more of potential buyers will see it exactly like that. Even if all the rumors are right and the Supra is somewhat different, go ahead and try to tell it to those 90% of potential buyers who read all the articles that point out its a Z4 copy.

Agree, also the A80 owners like the way it looks. So that's a positive. Hopefully the performance will match the appearance.

Agree. The A90 is a representation of a new generation Supra. It was Isao Tsuzuki, chief engineer of the A80, who inspired Tada-san to make cars. The Supra became legendary with the A80, so no doubt the inspiration comes from A80, and they appeal to A80 owners. Tada personally had discussions with A80 owners and asked what they want to see in A90. The answer is inline-6, front-engine, rear wheel drive.

It is definitely a new representation, I don’t think it’s meant for A80 owners, at least not the ones I know. It’s something different for sure and I do believe it will be a fun car but it’s seems a little confused at who it’s intended for. It’s definitely for younger people (20-35) but at a price they might not be able to afford. I think 35 and up will go for a better car with slightly different needs. Time will tell.

A new representation that will still carry over its tried and tested secret recipe. It might be pricey for most of the youth. I believe it will cater to 30s and up, most of those who want an extra car for weekend drives. A80owners, I believe if they want to upgrade, they will most likely just get the 2.0-liter variant and do an engine swap with their 2JZ.....so that they’ll have an A90 with 2JZ engine.

Here in the US this will be a huge issue for many! Most states require inspections on a regular basis. I will use my state for this example (Delaware), new cars get a 5yr tag, beyond that if your lucky and chosen at random you will get an extension of 2yrs sight unseen. Once this is over you will be required to pass the OBDII port diagnostic reading tests for all emissions. With a 2J you are then limited to running this version, and no aftermarket ECU offers a patch harness with this capability to retain the stock ECU in order to fool the test. Can it be done? Sure, but at what cost to you? Anyone wanting to make big power will need to circumvent the system or register their car in a state with no emissions testing, ie. Florida...

I purposly bought a 93 MKIV for this very reason, since I run a ProEFI ECU. OBDI cars only need to pass a sniffer test at idle and at 2500rpm w/o load. I just throw a bunch of timing at it and between that and running Ethanol I pass everytime!

The point you are missing is that for that kind of money people will have other better options. The A90 wouldn’t spark as much interest as you think.

Pricing would definitely be critical, an important factor for Toyota to make. This category of sports cars isn’t selling in big numbers. If Toyota wants to make the Supra sell, and be on top of the game, they better be careful pricing it. We could hardly conclude pricing for now as it will be the first Supra to be built outside of Japan.

Nomenclature plays. It’s one of the reasons, if not the majority of the reasons we’re thrilled for this car. May be a bit of nostalgia as well, with a mix of brand confidence. In other words, when buying the BRZ, I knew there were a couple of options out there that made more horsepower, I can speak on two separate occasions that for me, it didn’t matter. History, reliability, drive ability, etc. superseded everything else.

I’m sure it goes without saying, this consumer mindset is the minority at the end of the day. And if does get the axe due to this, great! Same thing will happen as it did with the A80, as far price increases goes on the second-hand market..

May the enthusiast scene forever keep growing.
