Are you going to buy the 4 cylinder version?

3SGTE was chosen over 2JZ for road racing in the A80 Supra. Not sure of the reasons, probably technically superior? (weight, mass centralization, lubrication, fuel consumption/efficiency) since Skylines were using 6cyl doesn’t seem like it was a rulebook problem.

For the regulated power levels, the 3S was more than capable, and offered a weight and weight distribution advantage over the I6.

for high rpm road racing, at the power levels in JGTC at the time, the 3S was a way better option for the reasons Nurburgring listed. Toyota/TRD had also already done a ton of development on that motor in WRC and hill climb too, so the 2J got left on the shelf.

Fyi - JGTC Supra never had a 3S; it had a 503E race engine.

They are significantly different engines and none of the parts are interchangeable. But my understanding is the 3S is loosely based on the 503 design.

I’ve stripped down a Rev 2 3SGTE, 3x Rev 3 3SGTE’s, a Rev 3 3SGE and a Rev 5 3SGE so I really do know my 3S engines.

I then went to Toyota MegaWeb in Tokyo where I got to look under the bonnet of the Castrol Tom’s Supra and also saw a 503E up close on a engine stand; doesnt look anything like a 3S.

(I think that was more of a general reply but...)

it's a good point; it was a 503E

while we're being pedantic though... it has been referred to by Toyota as a 3S (3S-G改/3S-GTM)

Ive never heard Toyota themselves refer to it as that. Out of curiosity where did you hear/read this?

Publicly available official literature wise there has never been a 3S-GTM Code but being a 3S super fan I would love to be proved wrong.

An M in the engine code i’ve only ever seen referred to as being an engine for the “Philippines' market” and never “Motorsport”.

Perhaps it came from the same place the unicorn story Rev3 3SGTE ct20b turbo came from? lol

I blame places like TTE, Toyocraft, Eagle and Tom’s. Im pretty sure its these semi-external bodies/partners which are the source of all fictional engine/part codes. They must coin their own codes during development.

You are pretty close to spot on.

Toyota's official designation internally was 3S-G改 (just means 3S-G modified). There is literature available on this in Japan, but other than that I can't say I have much else to offer.

3S-GTM is a marketing term not shown in any literature to my knowledge and was likely coined by TTE as you mentioned. Thing is, TTE was still Toyota though, just as Technocraft is. The difference is that it's not an official code and instead what they chose to call it (I'm guessing because they didn't speak Japanese).
