The ZF manual transmission is definitely a beast of a transmission (Can't be compared to the J160), but a clutch will wear out eventually once you start making power.
I assume you mean the Getrag V160?? If so, there are a number of manual transmissions (factory oem, not modified) that can handle the same if not more power than a V160.

We all love the MKIV's no doubt....however, I think alot of the gear the MKIV had may be "glorified" because of the internet and such. One perfect example is the V160 transmission. Although a fantastic piece of hardware, and has proven itself to be very durable and reliable...I can't agree that the new--er ZF manuals are not as good if not better. The ZF manuals (not all) are awesome transmissions....I am actually in the process of trying to source a ZF S6-xx 6spd transmission for my 2JZX project. There are tons of ZF swapped drag cars, race cars, drift cars, etc... that have had nothing but success with them. The only difference is not many people see these swaps or know of them. I personally know a handful of people who have done ZF swaps with 2JZ's, LS's, and RB's, all of which have zero videos or posts online about their experiences with those transmissions. However, all of them still run their cars to this day with absolutely ZERO issues and with power figures near or exceeding 1000hp. I think if more and more of those folks posted their swaps or experiences online, you would be hearing a different tone in the MKIV community....I mean, we are already seeing it now with the CD009 right? Again, not all ZF manuals are equal, just like not all Getrag's are equal. If....again ill say 'IF'....Toyota puts a beefy model ZF manual transmission in the MKV Supra, it will only be a matter of time until the internet glorifies that transmission and 'dethrones' the Getrag V160 from it's king seat. I love the V160/161....a great transmission no doubt. However, manual transmissions have come a long way since then, and the "stick" is still alive and well in many high performance cars....easily capable of over 1000whp without breaking a sweat.

Anyhow, sorry for the long post...I just wanted to throw that out there for everyone. Hopefully, we see a badass setup with the MKV....and not a W58 version 2.

***Correction*** The C4 ZR-1's factory manual transmission was a ZF.

your point stands none the less, but I also love modern Tremec transmissions (TR6060/6070) :)

I also agree in regards to them being a pretty brawny trans, but they have gotten much better than the T56 era lol. I want to swap a 6060 into my A70 eventually.

Well I knew it was over when in that interview between Tada and Inada Daijiro took place. Daijiro is the life long king of the tuning scene as we all know, and he was telling Tada that a manual isn't needed for the A90, that it's primitive. The only reason you would want it is so that your hand has something to do. lol

Toyota needs to see this

Tremec 6060 shifts wayyyyy better than a V160. I love all manuals but there are good and bad in all walks of life.

I actually meant the J160/AZ6 transmission that comes in the 86 and previously in the RX-8, MX-5 and IS/Altezza. It's a great transmission but it turns into glass at anything close to 350TQ. The ZF is definitely superior, but my point was a manual transmission loses it's firmness and drivability the more power you make it handle.

I agree with everything else though.

Automatic people arguing why they like auto and why manual lovers should just be happy with an automatic. Is like vegans telling me why I should only eat veggies because its proven to be better for me.

Just cause you guys love it, doesn't mean we should.

Let us be.
Sometimes for me it sounds like you manual freaks are the vegetarian. Just cause you guys love the manual, doesn’t mean I should.

Let me be.

I assume he meant the Zx6 transmission (TL70), which is based on the Toyota J160/Aisin AZ6, but just called it the J160.

Ah, sorry I thought only in regards to Supra’s.

Sure, the new auto’s may be a different beast...again, im not dismissing the idea of ever owning an auto trans car. Personally, having driven and owned both manual and auto cars for various reasons and applications, I enjoy a manual drivetrain car way more. These new auto’s and dct’s are pretty sweet though.

Alot of aftermarket tuner shops are offering the Magnum's as a great option for high HP builds. Granna's racing for a while has been the go to for 2JZ swaps with T56 Magnum's. I was originally looking at the T56's, then wanted to go the CD009 route...but due to the limited space under the hood of the Z32 with a tall 2JZ and the smaller Z32 tunnel clearance, a smaller bellhousing and narrower trans-body option is ideal without beating in panels. That's why I am looking for Getrag 420g's or ZF S6-xx's....both came in BMW's and both can handle boat loads of power. Have you considered these two for your swap?

I used to own a 997 gt3 with manual and switched to a 991.2 gt3 RS with the PDK. Of course that’s the only transmission available. At first I thought I might regret but not at all, never looked back. Don’t get me wrong, I would drive manual again but I see both have advantages and disadvantages, and of course, comes down to preference.

If anyone driven Porsche’s know they are the best in the business when it comes to PDK/DCT type transmission.

One of the best autos I’ve driven I would say is the Alfa Romeo ZF. Hopefully the auto in the Supra is similar.
