2020 Toyota Supra Officially Announced, Debuts in January (Detroit Auto Show)

Will the "embargo" be broken before Detroit?

  • Yes, the press embargo will be broken before the Detroit Auto Show.

  • No, automotive journalists may be tempted... but it won't happen.

  • What's an "embargo"?

  • It's 2021, I know what happened.

It’s Supra Time: 2020 Supra Debuts in Detroit

First Production Supra to be Auctioned in January

October 30, 2018
PLANO, Texas, October 30, 2018 -- Confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in the auto industry, Toyota announced it will premiere its oft-teased and much-anticipated 2020 Supra at January’s 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

But in fresh news, Toyota will be offering the first global production unit of the Toyota Supra through auction with all proceeds going to charity. This one-of-a-kind Supra will be delivered to the winning bidder when production starts in the first half of 2019.

Don't see anything that states production will start by June, says first half of 2019. It'll likely be available to purchase by June.

From the Toyota Global Press Release.

https://newsroom.toyota.co.jp/en/toyota/25146395.html

Confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in the auto industry, Toyota announced it will premiere its oft-teased and much-anticipated 2020 Supra at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, held between January 14 and 27.

Although Toyota ceased production of its highly popular and long-loved flagship sports car, Supra, in 2002, it was revived as a "GR Supra Racing Concept" at the 88th Geneva International Motor Show* earlier this year, demonstrating Toyota's commitment to bringing the Supra back to the market.

The prototype of the new Supra has already appeared in front of fans at various occasions this year. In July, the new Supra made its international debut in prototype form at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. More recently, in October, the Supra also took part in VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring, Race 9 and completed the race, as part of the vehicle's development activities.

Toyota expects its new Supra to reach the worldwide markets during the first half of 2019.

There are two halves to a year, each are 6 months. June is the sixth month of a year within the first half. It's pretty easy to understand the article. Also it said nothing about purchasing in the first half just production will start.

In contradiction the Toyota Japan news release says the Supra will "reach" worldwide markets in the first half of 2019 so some confusion there.

"Toyota expects its new Supra to reach the worldwide markets during the first half of 2019."

It's funny how we know the car will look nothing different to the renders, but we still get excited haha

I'm looking forward to seeing it in nice glossy marketing pics with no camo. I still feel like its hard to judge its looks a little. This is actually a pretty significant pic, first shot of the production car with no camo.

I guess the big reveal for the week is, its available in red!
