So what do they think at Toyota regarding all this hate? Tada or Toyoda or anyone else share their thoughts on this? Or are they just thinking that it'll pass? Or that people will change their minds when owners start getting their cars?
The Japanese always have and still hold German/European cars on a pedestal and believe that European cars will always be superior to theirs. So they probably thought they were doing everyone a favor by partnering with BMW, and are probably aghast right now with all the backlash they're receiving. lol

Too bad the aftermarket can't do anything about the slushbox.

If Toyota has decided to bring out a manual version (and given the lead times needed they probably have the plans for the next 2 model years locked in by now), they might be well advised to let that be known sooner rather than later. Sure, it may result in a short-term sales hit as some wait for the manual, but the positive response would be enormous, assuming the rest of the car reviews well. They could short-circuit a lot of the negative PR we're seeing in the enthusiast community.
Or Toyota could care less about PR and they have full confidence that it'll all pass once people start driving the car! Honestly, I understand some of the disappointment, but I've never seen such hate for a car without actually sitting behind the wheel! I, myself, am a huge fan of the A80 and always dreamed of owning one...a fifth generation was something that always sparked an interest in me. I think Toyota had an understanding that this car would spark some controversy, yet they're sitting calmly because I'm pretty sure they have some faith in a product that they've dedicated a large amount of years on. Basically, I think once people start driving the A90/MKV, the execs at Toyota will be the last ones laughing; not us! So, I really don't think Toyota's too concerned about PR right now. They'll confidently take their time as they always do and deliver a product worth our time and money...it's what they do! We've gotta be patient too, the car just launched lol.

A70, how come Toyota hasn't mentioned GR Supra being more rigid than the LFA ever since the launch?

Tada: "This car has a higher rigidity than the LFA and a lower center of gravity than the 86/brz!!!"

People that can't even afford the mkv: "bUt iT OnLy hAs 335HP......ReBaDgEd z4".

It's so sad, I wish people knew what Tada has done to get this car out. Nobody understand the amount of work that it takes in this day and age to get a product like this out....only to get shit on by a majority of the public that has never even seen the car or driven it. Sickening.

It's going to end up being super popular IMO just based on what it can do for the driver and because it's geniuenely great for its price point.

You have to get past the toxic group think stage that the 86/BRZ suffered through and then its all good. There will likely be a bit more contention over the trans, but when people flip a coin and hit 400whp+ everyone will quiet down about "not enough power"

This is the FRS/86 in a nutshell. A great great drivers car, a ton of fun.

PEOPLE WON'T EVEN CONSIDER IT BECAUSE OF THE 200HP NUMBER.They won't come in to drive the car.

Now the Supra has gotten much more real-world hype from where I'm sitting, meaning real customers calling and money being put up, so that bodes well. I really wish they had come out at 385, if only to position the Supa better on paper.

I think this is just the modern JP car culture in general
86: great car, gets hated on for [placeholder]
NSX: great car, gets hated on for [placeholder]
Supra: great car, gets hated on for [placeholder]
It's initiation at this point

Iā€™m not talking about JP car culture(internet non buyers) Iā€™m talking about real world Joe Customer. Iā€™ve spoken to many people that wonā€™t even come in for a drive on the 86 because of the horsepower disparity between it and the Mustang, Camaro, Challenger. If they actually had some seat time Iā€™m convinced some would love it, but we never got the chance. At 60k and 334 hp, the Supra is going to suffer similar comparisons, especially as a two seater. Itā€™s a different car, so hopefully will draw a different buyer, one that will give it a chance

Yeah HP is cheap and ubiquitous these days. You'll have a lot of would be buyers watching the commercials and thinking "335HP? My big 4-door grocery hauler has 300, and it's not fast at all..."

The current 86, if the 2+2 coupe layout does not hinder any needs for extra cargo, is to me an excellent all around car. It may not be fast and it may be inherently limited as to power gains but itā€™s one of the best basic cars Iā€™ve driven. Very fun, balanced, practical, decent on gas.

I have never understood why so many have unfairly compared it to the Supra. It has a different mission and itā€™s very good at it.

Iā€™ve only ever driven FR-Sā€™s and 86ā€™s at sea level so I can understand the criticism of their power loss as elevation climbs. With a second generation if there is more power and torque that should solve the criticism.

In the spectrum below the MKV Iā€™m also Iā€™m curious about is Toyotaā€™s recent registraion of the Celica trademark and Tada-sanā€™s interest in the GT-Four. And what Toyota has in mind for a performance Corolla hatch.

The way the lineup is shaping so far, with the MKV and its GRMN variant at the pinnacle, the broader vision for Toyota driverā€™s cars is going to get a lot more interesting.
