Toyota FT-1 concept & A90 Supra design dissected

Do you care if the next Supra has a "corporate image?"

  • No, as long as it looks good, I don't care if the rest of Toyota's line up is designed around it.

  • Yes, the Supra should be completely unique looking even among Toyota's fleet.

Agreed, but it's better than the new 86 front bumper.

I REALLY hope they keep the center stalk section of the FT-1 front bumper somehow. That to me is what makes the front end of the FT-1 look so good...that Formula 1 car inspired look.
The facelift 86 nose reminds me of the FT-HS.

X2, they need to make it slightly different from the 86. It needs to stand out otherwise people will just say it looks like a bigger 86 with more power.

Well the FT-1 was supposed to preview the future of Toyota design, not just Supra. But yea I'd hope the Supra being the halo sports car will embody that design more than any other Toyotas. So far from the spy photos it doesn't appear to do so.

I didn't even know this thing existed. This early stage concept is at Calty. The headlights look more production ready. The nose also seem to be thinner at the bottom, the lip and "front bumper" also looks slightly different as well.

Very cool. Does that one even have an interior?
Seeing how all the windows are tinted black, I would say no.

I think this is the equivalent to Honda's 1st NSX concept. From what I understand it was basically a body kit over the 1st gen chassis. It had no drivetrain or even electrical golf car motors to move around on stage with. As seen it the photos the interior was a mock up place holder.

it is probably just a shell over a rolling chassis with no interior. i do prefer the headlights on this concept.

Tinted black or are they just black?

Do we even know if it's a rolling chassis?

Seems like it could be a static model.

Anyway, cool to see this. I didn't remember ever seeing it before... first FT1 concept that was revealed had a full interior I believe.

I just assumed they were tinted.

On a different note I ran across this interesting clay model. It look like it influenced the FT-1.

Found some more photos of the early FT-1.

In the Calty lobby, you can’t miss the original FT-1 exterior and interior prototypes… positioned in front of their timeline of 40 years of stunning design work!

Yes, I had seen those stylings proposals from JZA80 (MKIV) programme. Those photos of clay models are from between January and July 1990. I believe the final design for the A80 was completed in the summer of 1990 and the final production body fully signed-off by the end of 1990 (roughly 2 1/2 years before 1993 production). The first MKIII-based mules were built in the fall of 1990 and then the first actual prototypes, were built in 1991. Visit here for some info as well.
