It was revealed in mid-January, but local details regarding the hotly anticipated fifth-gen Toyota Supra have been thin on the ground in the time since. But now, ahead of the sports-car's New Zealand arrival, a few titbits of information has emerged.
It's been confirmed that the country's opening allocation of cars is set to sit at 40. More Supras will likely come in later months, but given how far away New Zealand is from Austria — where the Supra is being built — those who miss out on a slot in the opening 40 should expect a lengthy delay for the next allocation.
Our first Supra models are expected to arrive by mid-July. The need to establish a support system and parts back-up with Austria is reportedly one of the main reasons for the six-month gap between reveal and arrival.
The detail everyone's most eager to learn is price — where will the Supra stack up in the performance-car game against rivals like the Jaguar F-Type, Lexus RC, Nissan 370Z, Porsche Cayman, and the Supra's BMW Z4 blood brother.
While the price remains a mystery for the moment, Driven understands that it's set to start at over $100,000.
We expect that being on the other side of the six-figure barrier probably means the New Zealand market will skip the base-spec 145kW/320Nm four-cylinder model (no tears were shed).
That leaves a few options. The Supra comes with two other engine options; the SZ-R's 190kW/400Nm turbo four, or the BMW B58-based twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six that makes 250kW/500Nm. It's fair to assume New Zealand will get the more powerful inline six, but whether we'll also get the SZ-R remains to be seen.
“The revitalisation of the iconic Supra name and spirit is very exciting for Toyota as a brand,” said Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Product Planning and New Vehicles Neeraj Lala back in January.
“It shows the potential for a car that can deliver high performance both on the road and track. As the halo model for Toyota sports cars, Supra points to a new-generation of driver focused vehicles that will offer dynamic styling and faithful handling, even at the limits of its performance.”
