Toyota said that the Supra is a car for the driver, which means there should be driver involvement all over. Yes, there’s driver involvement with an automatic; but definitely not as pure as to how a manual car offers.

I remember once toyota had that concept car that has gears to row on with, like actual stick shift but no clutch pedal. What do you all think of that? What if they offered that in the a90?

The Toyota GR HV Sports Concept. Is this what you mean?

Yes, that.
It’s still an automatic, though, with the manual mode, you can shift to any gear you prefer(like a manual without a clutch); unlike the tiptronic/paddle shifters that are available today, you can only change gears one step at a time(+/-). But still not enough freedom as compared to a proper manual .

I don’t know, people can talk the talk but will they walk the walk? I doubt the majority of them saying that would have considered the Supra in the first place.

Bought my 86 in 2012 without even seeing the car in person and waited 6 months for delivery. I wouldn’t have bought it if there was no MT.

Right now I am as excited for the new Supra as I was 7 years ago when the 86 came out but I will only buy one if an MT is offered.

If Toyota can offer a manual in the 86 and the Corolla hatchback, then they have no excuse not to offer it in the new Supra. Especially considering the manual take rate in the BRZ was 70% and 60% for the FR-S.

The article says only the base variant Z4 sDrive 20i will be available with manual. Regarding the Supra, I hope manual will be available with the 3.0-liter inline-6 variant.
According to Tada-san and at least one other engineer who has been interviewed a prototype manual Supra already exists and was R&D'd throughout the development of the Supra and Z4. We know they'd done all the work to make it exist. It was never confirmed whether or not they were referring to the 3.0L I6 GR cars, the 2.0L I4 cars or both. Series production is the big question. At least it's been acknowledged directly by Tada that he knows all too well that people want a manual 3.0L turbo Supra MKV.

Here's hoping initial sales of the auto-only Supra are very strong so that Toyota will register that as the "demand" needed to make the manual Supra variants that people have been clamoring for all along happen.

I have a feeling that the manual wasn't giving the feel that they wanted, so they're trying to make it more satisfying. Maybe it had sloppy shift feel, or something similar

Perhaps they need more time for r & d in order to make a true driver’s car with manual, with the Supra. They took a lot of time and r & d before they launched the Supra. For sure they’ll do the same thing with the manual. They do things more carefully(as compared to other automakers) and only release them when they’re sure that the product is already good enough. They don’t rush it.

I'd assume main reasons for not having a MT at launch for I6 are cost, sharing guts with BMW and emissions. They may have the design concept, but perhaps time and resources did not allow them to develop it.

Granted I4 will have MT, I don't know the details, but I'd assume and if i recall another post/article, it'll be from an existing BMW vehicle for B48, may be slightly optimized... so less RnD, less cost, easier to launch, proven tech...

Tada-san's "hope it will sell, so Toyota can release MT" is extremely counterintuitive. If it sells well, they're more than likely to reap the fruits of AT and be like our work is done here, people loved the AT, no need for MT... but it also tells me that there are perhaps budgetary roadblocks from being able to release MT. that hints me that design is not complete, or testing isn't... then back to square one...
I think there needs to be a poll to see what percent of people who will buy AT the first year, will then sell? and get MT the next year. Or maybe Tada-san will offer AT to MT package lol?

Audience for Supra:
Enthusiast 1, wants to buy Supra ASAP, will opt in for AT the first year. Can't wait any longer. Does not consider any other cars.
Enthusiast 2, wants to buy Supra but won't if no MT. May wait years and still get zilch. Is also considering other vehicles...
Fan 1, will buy Supra with whatever, whenever, no rush. Will see how it pays out in the market first.
Fan 2, has seen the hype, the Superbowl ads, wants to get in on the action asap...etc.

I am enthusiast 2 in the above situations. Here’s to hoping a manual comes out one day.
