I saw other vids from press week that showed shift lights on the interior of the tach.? <insert automatic tranny joke here>

I assumed, based on the shift lights in other vids, that when in manual mode, the car would sit at rev limiter and not shift up on its own?

I don’t really care if it shifts on its own or hits a limiter, but I wanted those cool looking shift lights on the tach!?!

Yes.

I don't care if was sub 1 second 0-60, people want the rewards of driver engagement and the challenges it brings, even if that means much slower times, not a car that does so much, that you become a passenger that can sit back and take selfies with a big gulp in hand. Queue the R36's rumours of self-race-drive mode.
^^ 100% agree. If the ZF8 8HP automatic allows the Supra to meet the fleet CAFE requirements it needs to so that manual editions can exist then great. If someone wants the ZF8 auto then great because it is arguably the best conventional automatic transmission made today and the Supra team applied their own shift logic programming for it.

But if I'm going to buy a $50k++ two seat turbo sports car that isn't an EV or hybrid it is going to have a manual and I don't care if that makes it slower than 4.1 seconds 0-60 even with the best driver possible. The car would be for *me* to enjoy, not someone else. If I want to make it significantly faster I'll look into where the tuning is going to give it much more horsepower than stock.

A manual is about having fun with the car because you the driver become a direct part of it as it accelerates, decelerates, negotiates turns, changes in elevation, etc.

The stock 2JZGTE in a 3400lb chassis is supposed to achieve a 0-60 between 4.9-5.1 seconds with the 6-speed Getrag manual. Without Launch Control enabled the MKV with the ZF8 auto isn't going to do it in 4.1 and in most driving situations you're not going to always use that feature anyway even if you gun it from a stop light.

And the 0-60 has nothing to do with how the car performs while maintaining its speed on challenging road courses.

The engine produces almost its full torque from 1600rpm and that torque remains relatively constant from what I understand. This is actually better than the stock 2JZGTE which developed 80% or so of its full torque from 1800 rpm and up through the second stage turbo.

Give the MKV a manual gearbox and it will be plenty fun AND quick with an engine like that.

Have to agree. Especially with the car being as good as the reviews claim it is. It NEEDS a manual.

Car & Driver stated the launch control was a bit overzealous.

We're now able to quantify our recent positive tingles from our first time behind the wheel of a production 2020 Toyota Supra. We drove one back to our office from Toyota's launch event at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia and have now had the chance to run our full gamut of performance tests on it.

In short, the fifth-generation Supra is quick—even quicker than anticipated, hauling to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and steamrolling through the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds at 113 mph. Our best runs involved a light dollop of brake torquing to get engine revs off idle and then carefully applying the gas pedal to avoid excessive wheelspin. The launch-control program, which was inconsistent in its engagement, was considerably slower.
I'm a big fan of manuals (haven't owned an auto equipped performance car in 20+ years) but I'm seriously considering the Supra's.
