Yeah that's 100% BS. Doug was invited and flown out like EVERY SINGLE PERSON THERE. Nobody was "paid". This is how these manufacturer events work, and how they've always worked, for every manufacturer.

Doug's review showed that he clearly wasn't paying attention and clearly didn't give enough of a shit to ask any real questions. Tada San answered every single thing I asked him, including all the most technical stuff, exactly what they thought the Supra legacy was, specifics about the partnership, etc. Doug focused on hood latches and strut braces for some reason.

Doug's review is honestly one of the worst ones imo, and I hate to say that, but he seriously seems like he's being obtuse just to satisfy a negative outlook. Usually I don't mind his videos, but this was lazy at best, malicious at worst.
How's he as a person? Although his review on Supra was crappy and poorly done, I find his sarcasms to be delightful in his videos.

He was the wave after me, so I only saw him in passing. I have spoken to him via email before and one of my close friends owned the Alfa Romeo QV that he reviewed. He seems like a nice guy, very genuine to his personality that you see on camera. I don't want to make it seem like I'm attacking his character or anything, I have no doubt he's a great person to be around. I just really didn't like how he did that Supra video. I've made plenty of bad content before too, so I can't vilify him for that. I just find it disappointing that he went that route considering he has the biggest audience of all of automotive YouTube. That being said, many will claim I'm biased towards Toyota, which very well may have some truth in it, but I think being a Toyota fan since childhood also makes me more critical of their mistakes.

Also, in regards to the 86s fender vents, mine is cut out and it does a great job of heat extraction, but my engine bay is constantly filthy because of the water that gets inside when it rains. Probably a rust hazard too because snow gets in there and sits. As an OE, extraneous heat extraction prob isn't worth those tradeoffs.

Not saying that's exactly the case with the Supra, but again, it is what it is. I don't really like the vents myself either.

I personally donā€™t like Dougā€™s style of review but I do feel like a lot of his points were justified. Why make all these ā€œdesign choicesā€ for the aftermarket? Why not just include them, they would still be tunable parts anyway... I know this is predominately an American site but everywhere else in the world we just canā€™t see be value in this. The cayman is actually a better proposition in the U.K. and Iā€™m no fan of Porsche.

I appreciate I have been heavily critical in this thread and others on this site but itā€™s only because like yourself, I am a huge Toyota fan and have been since childhood. I do feel like there isnā€™t enough from both sides on the forum. Thereā€™s a lot of blind hype on here.

I expected more passion, commitment and in house development from Toyota. My opinion on BMW is also slightly biased as Iā€™ve had such bad experiences with them from a reliability stand point.

The car is not bad. I canā€™t claim that at all. Itā€™s fine as a sports car. I just donā€™t understand how it can be considered acceptable as a supra. The thing that bothered me the most is that interior. What on Earth were they thinking? Itā€™s one thing using an engine but everything on the car is BMW and changing the gear stick slightly, just doesnā€™t cut it. I couldnā€™t sit in that car and think Toyota. Iā€™ve not had the chance to drive the Z4 yet but my local dealer has 2 and Iā€™ve sat inside it. I have to say that the differences are minimal in my opinion.

The supra name has always been groundbreaking starting from the beginning. The A80 outperformed Ferraris and Porscheā€™s of the time, better braking, better acceleration. Even going back to the 2000gt which cemented Toyotas capability.

Personally as a huge Toyota fan, I canā€™t go through with the purchase. I hope others will enjoy their cars but a supra, this isnā€™t. Iā€™ve heard a few reviewers say think of it as a hardtop Z4 coupe... well why not name it that then?

Totally valid opinion! It's more German than all of us wanted I think, but at this point in time, there's quite literally nothing we can do about it.

As far as the aftermarket stuff goes though, I personally think it's all reasonable on Toyota's part. Why put a diff cooler if you don't need it? That's extra weight. The additional bracing in the front was causing understeer with the suspension and tire setup, so they removed them but left the mounting spots in case people wanted to race with a more aggressive front tire and damper setup. The front air dam is fully open but has a blockoff diverter because the radiator was overcooling the engine with the current setup. None of this stuff was done just to appease the want for extraneous aftermarket parts, it's all thought out stuff that allows for an upgrade path for owners should they want to choose one of many directions to go with the car. The MKIV became what it is today because it was moddable, and Tada-San made it abundantly clear that he understood that and knew that the MKV needs to have the same level of customizability while also having a robust platform to build off of.

As far as beating Porsches and Ferraris, I hate to say it, but that could never happen. Porsches and Ferraris were straight up bad in the 90s. The 968 was just not a good car and the 348 wasn't either. But now the 992 and 488 are at the top of their game (and have tons of competition too), and their prices reflect that. Toyota was just plain lucky in the 90s that Porsche and Ferrari were lazily putting out sub-par automobiles. I'll go out on a limb and say that the Supra absolutely will beat up on a Cayman, for 10k less, and the 718 is a great car, so the idea of Toyota beating Porsche isn't too far off, to be fair. Toyota could have probably made a 90k 911 competitor, and maybe even beat them. But I couldn't afford that, and I think a lot of people on this forum who have deposits down couldn't have afforded that either. That's the catch-22, I suppose.

Interesting how much that EU regulated exhaust noise seems to change the opinion of what these journalists think of the engine vs. the full blown U! S! A! exhaust.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOOK AT THIS LITTLE BITCH WHINING. Chris you inconsistent douchebag. Everyone is shitting on him in the comments and putting him in his seat where he deserves it. Especially in his most latest tweet where he goes on a tirade and being a total tosser. Nostalgic dense ass. Just as immature as Vehicle Virgins.

All right rage over. But you get my point. That's not something he should whine about. It's like he doesn't get it. I don't even want to get into the details because I'm just done with this guy.

So, for the people who were not at the event, what did Tada-san say about the fake vents, aftermarket parts and DCT vs Auto?
The Fast Lane posted a 22 minute video of that Q&A session. I suggest you watch it and form your own conclusions. I lost a lot of respect for Doug as well.

The f355 and 993 turbo of the 90ā€™s were no joke, they are legendary cars today. The Supra was in the middle of the pack during those days, the C5 vette, NSX, e36 M3, during testings in 97/98.

Irrational temper tantrum triggered by honest commentary/opinion by a relatively well known driver-turned-journalist

So which bad-touch comment is it that invoked your tirade? o_O Honestly I can't say I fundamentally disagree with any of his comments, for what they are; they're certainly not unique nor uncommon among a tangible percentage of enthusiasts. He's basically calling a spade a spade -- and...? Cool car, performance metrics thus far have been a welcome surprise, but it's still not what many of us have been waiting 20 years for.

I've watched several "reviews" by now, and it's pretty easy to pick out which ones are essentially commercials, parroting the talking points and counterpoints vs. reasonably and realistically unbiased.

The echo-chamber effect around here is nearly as bad as politics...! Any negative criticism is taken as an abhorrent attack, even if grounded in fact... Weird..
