When the A80 came out it was about on or maybe slight above par with Corvette (for a couple of years), RX7, porche and a few others. 2019, it is about at par with Porche, there is no RX7 or other Japanese car in the same niche, and just slightly below a Corvette. So, it hasn't drifted very far at all from its original performance position relative to its competition. The problem is not that Toyota made a high performance car that is attainable for the masses, but what it lacks with the name / performance expectations set forth by the A80.
I think it is the reputation/performance expectations that it achieved through tuners that many people are comparing it too. Toyota should not be held accountable for producing a car that meets those expectations, pushing it out of its original market position.
