You want the Supra to be an AWD car?are you insaneAll the controversy just goes to show what the supra name means. Toyota was never going to be able to meet the impossible expectations for a new supra, so I do feel sympathetic for them when they are being so heavily laden with hate on the new car. I follow most of the official Toyota's on IG, twitter and FB, and anything about the supra is 90% negative comments and defensive replies from Toyota. Despite this, Toyota has hyped the hell out of this thing, influencing the reviews all over the place, and overtly defending all the cars problems with very poor explanations, just to try and convince everyone this thing is fantastic. I dont think they have succeeded. Not because its a bad car, its genuinely a good car ..... but its definitely not a great car... its in the middle, its entry level,... Its mediocre in the world of performance cars.... That's the problem.
The new 911 GT2 and GT3 are great cars. The GTR is great. The R8 is great. Just about anything from Ferrari Mclaren or Lamborghini is great. Thats what people expect of the Supra name - greatness ... and the simple fact is, the new supra isn't. Sure, Its good, but its just another entry level 2 door sports car, that's got nothing particularly exciting to shout about. Its inferior next to the great cars, and looses to them all day long, no matter what modification you do to it - the gap to the great cars is simply too big. If you had buckets of money, you want the GT2/3, 488 pista, Hurrican performate, the 720s, the R8 or GTR and so on and so on ... you wont even consider the new supra. Its just not good enough to be on the radar, which is in contradiction for the expectations of the supra badge... queue the internet hate - and just because the new supra its vastly cheaper, that doesn't make its performance more respectable, its still a slow, imprecise boat anchor car next to the great cars..... and that's the core problem with the MkV, Its designed to only be good. Nothing more.
You get what you pay for, and in today's day and age, Just as the Porsche boxter is a poor mans 911, the new supra is the same thing to a variety of better cars. In fact, if you you think about it, in 1993, when the MKIV was right up there at the top of the performance tree, the Miata was considered the cheap and cheerful little hairdresser cars of the day. That's where the new supra fits now. Its like an uprated Miata. A great little sports car ..... But its no top level performance car.
I think the car you're looking for is the LC-F. It's 100% Toyota (Lexus), extremely rare and low production volume, power, price and weight (rumored 600hp, probably +3800lbs and definitely over 150k), will be within the ball park of the NSX and the top trim GT-R and no manual but neither are the other two cars you keep referencing. You're right, I've expressed my opinion... time to move on. No one else worth discussing with here.
The trans and diff coolers were added to all trim packages in '17 and could initially be purchased with a "track package" that also included them in the '15 and '16 models. The mustang can't even handle two laps on the track before going into limp home mode.
When did you purchase your MKIV? I still think that the MKIV Supra was a giant fluke by Toyota at the time. The cars did not sell well when they were launched, they were regarded as odd looking at the time and honestly.... for the price at that time, people would have rather bought a Porsche and not a Toyota. As a result, the poor sales is what makes them "exclusive" today, not because Toyota only wanted to sell a few and make it exclusive. If they could have sold 10k cars a month for 7 years, they would have! You're right, I've expressed my opinion... time to move on. No one else worth discussing with here.
I honestly don't think the Mk4 was a fluke at all. The massively overbuilt durability of the JZ... perhaps... but Toyota put a heck of a lot of work into making the Mk4 what it was and kudos to them. I do completely agree however, that they never intended to make it "exclusive". You're completely right that if they could have sold 10k a month they would have, NA or Turbo, whichever, and we've likely be on the 6th or 7th generation of Supra. When did you purchase your MKIV? Sure we all wanted an in-house Toyota Supra with a new 3JZ, but that was never going to happen and 9/10 of you guys whining about it, wouldn't shell out the higher price tag. Shoot... people are complaining about the $55-60k price tag. The fact that we are getting a turbo car with close to 400hp with a Toyota badge is mind boggling to me. If this thing does well, it may motivate Toyota to make an in-house Supra down the road. Perhaps partnering with BMW allowed them to tear a modern inline 6 engine apart, bypass a lot of R&D from making an in-house ground up motor and have the blueprints for a modern emissions friendly I6? I'm not the biggest fan of the MKV, but it looks like it will be a fun car to zoom around town in
I don't think hes talking about the build quality or the actual car itself, but more about the events and time frame that caused poor sales and made them so rare in the US.I honestly don't think the Mk4 was a fluke at all. I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS EXACT THING FOR A GAJILLION YEARS ARE PEOPLE STARTING TO WAKE UP NOW?When did you purchase your MKIV?
