I keep reading about GDI (gasoline direct fuel injection) engines and how the valves are getting gunked up. I was wondering if deleting the EGR system or blocking it off would eliminate this problem. Also does anyone know of any solutions BMW has come up with for eliminating valves from being gunked up?

Seeing that you live in California, it'd probably be unwise to try to delete EGR. I don't have hands on experience, but my theoretical tells me that injection characteristics would change, hence after treatment will change, sensors will give errors, ECU would need to be altered...

If I am not mistaken, the EGR is due to valve overlap in the timing which causes the engine to reburn gasses. It is only something you can tune out, not something that you can necessarily "remove".
He is talking about removing the EGR system. I've done it on every sports car I've owned. Its only there for emission purposes. It helps gas mileage but hurts the environment.

If you look up GDI and valve gunk you will understand what I’m talking about.

Haven't tried an EGR delete but having owned a 135 with those issues my recommendation is a good catch can instead, still legal that way (at least where i live)
