HKS is the latest company to build a 2ZJ-powered version of the new A90 Toyota GR Supra, and it'll be drifting its way up Goodwood hill next week

You didn’t think Daigo Saito’s A90 drift car would be the only 2JZ-powered Supra, did you? We’re already on our third - the second being a car fielded by Saito’s fellow D1 GP drifter Kawabata Masato - with this latest effort coming from HKS.

The Japanese company - which supplied to parts to both previous 2JZ A90 Supra efforts - has revealed its own entry into this new tuning niece ahead of a public debut at next weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. There, it will slide its way up the famous hill climb with official HKS driver Nobuteru Taniguchi at the helm.

The setup sounds quite similar to Saito’s car. The 2JZ-GTE in this one has the same 3.4-litre HKS enlargement kit and an HKS GTIII-4R turbocharger. Power is slightly lower at just under 700bhp, but that’ll be plenty for Taniguchi-san to light up the rearmost Yokohama Advan A052 tyres while he’s sitting in the Bride driver’s seat.

The HKS A90 drift monster sits on Hipermax dampers and has been given a dramatic wide-arch conversion. The finishing touch is a giant rear wing.

We can’t imagine there’s a whole lot of stock A90 Supra left in there, but who cares when the resulting car looks like this?

Once you get the crap out the way the B58 will look better too. Stock 2JZ don't fit as cleanly as that as far as I'm aware. Moving wires and cleaning things up will make a huge difference if possible I reckon.

You be the judge. Honestly, I haven't seen many BMW builds with the newer BMW's where they cleaned up the engine bay.

It looks so bad because the intercooler has to fit up there too.
+1 as well as being it's tilted and a spaghetti factory

Wonder why they all go for the 2J in these drift builds. First Daigo's car and now this. I mean the B58 can pretty much handle the same abuse since it's also all forged internals. Maybe because the aftermarket support for the new Supra hasn't taken off yet? Idk.

Probably time constraints for each competition. Some of these teams know the 2jz inside out vs being relatively new to the b58. Rather race and compete with something time tested than gamble on something that they haven't had the time to do the R&D on.

Just wait for some aftermarket head covers and for someone to clean up all them spagetzies. Any engine bay could look good in all honesty. Put the cash, taste and dedication = win.

yeah, it's all timing - they go 2JZ because it's old as fuck and all the bugs are known and documented and there's less variables to them achieving the build date.

Every early Supras in Japan so far 2JZ'd . . . . What a way to promote the production car to consumers.

It’s because HKS doesn’t know how to tune the B58. The only companies that would have any clue are the ones that are tuning the current BMW models running B58’s. I do not know of any ways to run a stand-alone ECU with this engine.

Yeah but the Japanese need to get on board since it's a Japanese car. I mean they have Japanese tuners such as ASSIST tuning BMW's...http://assist-kyoto.co.jp/

To HKS and others, its a whole new engine to develop for. They developed and tune parts for new engines all the time when they are released. Cars like the 350/370z, FRS/BRZ/86, GTR...what makes this any different? Those cars had brand new engines to these companies at the time. HKS never developed parts for them and yet started prototyping things like exhausts and coilovers and moved onto to serious development later (like they are doing with the Supra...new coils and exhaust already developed and testing). All they gotta do is crack the ECU, offer a reflash, throw on a turbo kit, downpipe, exhaust, intercooler, paired with their Racing Suction kit filter, and there you have it. A well balanced car tuned by a legendary company like HKS.
