In south florida there are quite a few base C7 in the 50K range. I've been looking at them & have test driven a couple - actually pretty nice sports car. The reason I was looking at the C7 was the space behind the seats for my dog & stuff. However their A8 can be a problem if you get a bad one. Currently a class action law suite ongoing with the A8, deal breaker for me. Along comes the Supra, space behind the seats - take out that bar(not structural) - space for my dog & some stuff. In terms of the BMW 6 - great engine - spent 7 yrs driving an M3. In terms of the ZF8 have owned 4 vehicles w/this trans, including a Challenger Scatpack. GREAT trans. In terms of Toyota/Lexus great vehicles, BUT for me too boring, UNTIL this new Supra came along. So at this point I'll be waiting for the C8 - Base w/Performane exhaust OR a Base Supra w/blind spot option. Looking at the price difference - 10K. I'll make my decision mid 2020. I really don't want to leave my wife @ home so I'm leaning toward the Supra at this point in time.

The Chief engineer for the C8, Tadge Juechter, told Corvette Blogger that there won't ever be a manual transmission for the C8. Only 15% of people bought them in the C7 and that number goes down every year so there was no business case to offer one this time around. Plus apparently they couldn't find any one to build them a manual for the C8 a that low of a volume and be cost effective.

It looks like BMW will still offer the manual in the M3/M4 according to car scoops:


"BMW M chief executive Markus Flasch has confirmed that the next-generation M3 and M4 will be available with a manual transmission...Manual is very important. The manual stick shift is not a performance-bringer, because an automatic transmission is just faster, you can ask any race driver,” he said. “But it gives the vehicle character and I kind of compare it to people who love mechanical watches; it isn’t more precise and it doesn’t have any advantage at all but it’s a character feature. So is a stick shift.”

The Supra could be a great alternative if Toyota can find a way to quickly shoehorn one of the BMW manuals in there. Plus the Supra is the same size as a BRZ in length but obviously a lot wider which I think is a good thing. The C8 is a much bigger car by at least 10 inches in length which I'm not a fan of. And the C8 is going to be about 200 pounds heavier as GM is only quoting dry weight of around 3366. All things to consider.

I pulled my down on the LE today. I was set to get a LE at 10k over msrp but decided to drop out. Half of me feels bad but I wish the best to all of you with the new Supra.

The other reason was the C8 corvette. I had an nsx in the 90s and loved it. I never planned to get a better but the c8 looks great on paper so I plan to get it by early next year.

Let's just hope that whatever stats GM claims are actually reliable. Historically that hasn't been the case.

i.e. They claimed the 0-60 of the Z06 would be 2.95s but in reality all the videos I saw it ran 3.5 to 3.6s. Still a seriously fast car, but there's a big difference between claiming 2.95s and actually doing 3.5s.

Funny stuff. Alot of unknowns on the c8. All speculation. Need to get it into the hands of the journalists to stop the bench racing.

We have a C8 coming via one of my local partners. So that along with the supra we hope to be able to give an unbiased review of both. Not sure when the C8 will arrive though.

After much back and forth thinking I've decided I like the Supra best. A fully-loaded car is 56K and a similar spec C8 will be $70K. I would personally rather have $14k in mods and extra money for track time/HPDE lessons

Most of my fun driving is done on backroads where 400hp is just fine and with a shorter wheelbase and lower weight the Supra might be just as fun as the mid-engine C8

Pound-for-pound the C8 is the better car no question, but not for me. I feel more comfortable taking a 50k on track rather than a 70k car, I also worry less when parking places if the car cost less, especially considering I can only have 1 car at this time.

If I had multiple cars and much deeper pockets maybe the C8 would be my pick. Thing is, I like to look at cars as a 3-4 year commitment so by then, after a Supra, the C8 might just be the car for me.

Go over to the Corvette forums, some are screaming bloody murder about losing the manual, one even launched a petition to get Chevy to add a manual. It's the same no matter what car you like, every one has an opinion and if it doesn't line up with said opinion they get mad.

So you're saying you would buy a Supra and ultimately trade it away for a Corvette?

What features does a $56k Supra have that a base Corvette doesn't?

I do think it being a DCT helps reduce some hate but yes no manual will always get hate regardless of what buy rates say

^I'm pretty sure he is implying that he will own the supra for a few years and then "might" trade it on a c8. I don't see any issue with that train of thought.

I think it would be pretty dumb to buy a supra now and then trade it in on a new c8 the second it comes out taking a huge depreciation hit; but to each their own.

Coming from a current Corvette(C6) owner, I will say the C8 is a home run. I have a new Supra sitting right by me in the showroom, and it is a great looking car. I am a service manager, and the Supra will be a challenge to work on. The Supra looks a lot better in person. The lines are real good, and you can really see the detail in the design. We have a GR for sale. Red.

You're only looking at it from a price point perspective. Have you ever driven a mid engine car before? Only reason why I'm asking is b/c a MR car is so much more fun to drive then a FR and if you haven't, I highly recommend it. I'd take a flat six Cayman over the MKV any day of the week primarily for it's MR layout.

Can you elaborate more on the C8 being a home run (I 100% agree it's a home run) and a challenge to work on given you're a Service Mgr at Toyota.

I don’t think the MR inherently makes it better. The cayman is good because it’s good.
