What do you think about the trans and diff setup in the c8. Looks like the diff is in the transmission. So if the diff grenades so does the trans. Food for thought.
All FWD cars have integrated transmission and diff (aka "transaxle") and there have been a few front-engine RWD cars that do it too (ie, Nissan GT-R). It is standard fare for many mid-engine or rear-engine sports cars. I never remember hearing about major failures with any of these but I suppose there are many different ways it could be done, with transmission and diff in different levels of proximity. Many of them share the same case and same gear oil.

Ya I'm just not a fan of it. I'm sure if designed correctly it will be great

People who buy new cars off the lot or any used car buyer. Individual options only works for people that custom order their new car. Anyone after that will have to compromise. Iā€™ve never been able to find a new in stock Porsche exactly how I would want it.
If a car is plentiful enough, and your taste isn't too peculiar, you can generally find a car on a lot specced exactly or very near to your ideal spec when there are individual options. E.g., an F150, Mustang Gt, Corvette, etc.

911 is a little harder as there are just so many (too many?) options and not enough inventory.

What do you guys think about this mechanicā€™s thoughts on the new C8 Corvette?
Agree! New design, new layout, new electronics, new transmission, no Z06, ZR1. Let the guys who put a deposit down do the beta testing and long term review of the C8.

By that logic, though... wouldn't the same thing apply to the MKV? I think he's against buying the new model of any new car that's undergone a major overhaul, not just the C8.
The same thing applies to all cars, not just the mk5 too lol.

At the end of the day, I think some big turn-offs for me on the Corvette are:

(i) There's going to be a ton of them - Corvette typically produces like 30,000 of these things a year, so I suspect they're going to be very common.

(ii) It's commonly viewed as being an old person's car. (This crowd that showed up to see the C8 isn't helping that image).

(iii) Instead of coming up with their own unique design, i feel like they somewhat abandoned their Corvette roots and tried to rip off the Ferrari 458 for the front / side of the car, and then for some inexplicable reason they conceptually used a Camaro on the back end. Here's a couple of renders I quickly threw together that help to show what I'm talking about:

The interior design and the level of customization are two huge pluses - I wish that Toyota allowed you to pick from more colors and mix and match to create something that's more to your liking, but they're a Japanese company and that's not what Japanese companies are known for.

Couple of things to note:

I cant help but think if anyone is buying a car on the basis of which makes me look more exclusive, then then choice of a supra or corvette is the least of your problems. You should be looking to finance on an exotic show-pony instead.

Most sports cars and better are older peoples cars, because they can afford them, whilst most young people can not. Without them you would never have had the MkIV legacy, the GTR, anything exotic, the vast majority of high performance and exotics are bought by older people. You need the older people to buy them so that they can get tossed to the used market. If they don't buy the cars, then the manufactures have to downgrade their cars to affordably lower spec, lower performance, like in the MKV. There is virtually no young people able to outright afford a top tier car like a 911, R8, Huracan and so one, I hope a huge amount of the older generation buy the new C8 in top trim, its more for me in the used market down the track.

Calling the C8 a Ferrari copy is pretty hypocritical from the Zupra community, given 75% of the MkV is Z4 componenetry ... there is certainly inspiration in the C8 design, there is licenced copy and paste in the MkV.... and lets be honest, any supercar-styled looks are vastly better than the new supra's squashed and skewed ft1.

Worrying about the C8 breaking and being more costly and problematic isnt any worse than the the MkV. Break a diff in the MKV your looking at a new one from BMW, and its an e-diff as well remember, plus its BMW, they have an appalling track record for the last decade in performance car reliability ... none of the risk and concerns about blowing up engines, trans, etc in the C8 are really any different to the risk and associated damage in the new supra... in fact GM will likely be cheaper in that respect than BMW.
I think thereā€™s a stark difference with what the Supra did and what the C8 did. The Supra is inspired by Toyotaā€™s own design (the FT-1), which they basically teamed up with BMW to make an affordable retail version of it a reality. They co-developed with BMW because they otherwise wouldnā€™t have been able to put an I6 in this thing without it costing a boatload, and as part of that collaboration are sharing parts since itā€™s being manufactured in Austria, which is much closer to the BMW supply chain. The interior obviously looks like BMW because it is a BMW.

The C8 on the other hand has clearly ā€œborrowedā€ external design from something made by someone else. Itā€™s trying to look like a supercar produced by another company (Ferrari) as opposed to such a car made by Chevy. It almost feels like the Supra is a group project at school where two kids worked together on something, whereas the C8 is one kid copying another kidā€™s work and turning it in as his own. To me thatā€™s a big difference. I donā€™t think itā€™s hypocritical to feel this way because thinking the C8 looks like a cheap Ferrari and acknowledging that the Supra is a stumpy German version of the FT-1 are not mutually exclusive. I personally just happen to like the stumpy German FT-1 much more than the American Ferrari Camaro hybrid.

I think 85% of the C8's exterior look is driven by the mid engine layout. The rest is extremely similar to the C7, Camaro, and other corporate design cues.

I keep hearing that, but many of the things that changed don't seem to have anything to do with the new mid-engine layout.

Also, for the record, although the Corvette has always kind of been perceived as a pensioner's car, I've actually liked the way it looked since I was a kid. I was really sad to see them move even further away from the round tail lights and go full Camaro in this iteration of the car. A lot of people who I've talked to about the car have praised it by saying things like "You almost can't even tell that it's a Corvette!" or "It almost looks like an exotic!" I guess that's a good thing to some, but to me it felt like it had lost a lot of its quintessential "Corvetteness" in an effort to fit in with the cool kids.
