Model code designation? / Why do we use the A90 name for the 5th Gen Supra?

Do you think we should continue to use the a90 nomenclature even though our cars are not an A chas?

The GR thing is Akio's brainchild, and despite the fact that he is awesome is a silly thing over all. Tada once made a joke that I probably should not post here that he was going to find the cheapest adhesive he could find for the GR badge and that hopefully the wind would blow the badge off the car lol.

Marketing wise though, it is the GR Supra worldwide, hence why every car has the badge on the back. How regular people or even staff refer to it is a different matter however. There are also plenty of Japanese ads showing this as well.
i hope ichitaka doesn't show him this....

lol, he would likely deny ever having said it. Also, being Ichitaka is Japanese iirc, he would likely not ask or bring something of that nature up as it would be very rude and put Tada on the spot (especially an Akio/GR comment).

that said, I assume the official name submitted to each government entity is just Toyota Supra.
Whelp, it appears as though Tada-san may have had his way with the cheap adhesive...

(Not really, but it is comical that this has apparently actually happened already.)

haha, I think that was likely a case of just not being applied at the factory? I have one the badges at my desk, and the adhesive looks to be the same used on most of our other badges (hard to tell without checking).

Interesting info.

No matter what it's called, I'll be glad to call one mine.

Add to the identity crisis:

My Toyota Supra Connect app calls it a “Spx40i.”
SPX40i is the more or less official BMW model name for the 3.0l B58 variant.

For USA:

Platform Code: J29 (note: Z4 is G29)
Model Code: DB43 (VIN reads DB4C)
Model Name: SPX 40i

B48D versions for other markets are SPX 20i (145 kW) and SPX 30i (190 kW).

That’s good to know - thanks for sharing (I was also wondering about the Spx 40i in Supra Connect and figured that it had something to do with BMW but wasn’t sure what).

In any event, I think that A90 is probably the easiest way to refer to it. I’ve most often heard it called that in Japan (A90型). Also, in Europe, their equivalent of the USA’s Launch Edition is called the A90 Edition (and it states on the inside of the car “A90 Edition X/90” like it does in the LEs with X/1500).

https://www.toyota-europe.com/world-of-toyota/toyotagazooracing/toyotagrsupra/a90-edition

So I personally call it the A90.

Hey guys...a new Supra owner here (#935), and, here is my first official stupid question...What is the A90 that I keep seeing mentioned ? As I said, I'm new to this car,(but aI fell in love with it immediately) having had Mustangs, and Camaro's for quite some years. So please forgive my ignorance.

A90 refers to this generation of Supra, the Mk 5. The first Supra was the A40, then the A60 was the Mk 2, A70 Mk 3 and the Mk 4 was the A80 generation.

It is confused a little more with the A90 Edition in Europe but it is just a special edition with a different paint colour to that normally available, but all of the new generation are A90 Supras.

And here I was expecting a "what oil to use" question lol.

A90 is the chassis code.

Technically, it's supposed to be a J29 since it's shared with the BMW Z4 which is G29. A90 was just superimposed because of the previous Supra chassis code names.
