I wanted to start a thread on RD and/or LJ installation how to, tips, tricks, etc. Let's keep out of the "which RD detector is better debate, this detector vs that detector, why don't you just drive the speed limit...lol  etc. This thread could include hardwiring, detector placement, wire routing, laser jammer head placement and stuff like that.

I'm hopeful BlendMount makes something for our rear view mirrors. Does anyone know if we use the same rear view mirror stalk as most BMW's? Any idea which specific models? Hopefully there's an easy way to tap into power at the rear view mirror as well.

I have a blendmount sitting in a pile next to my radar detector, dashcam, and ceramic coat....just need my car to arrive.

Anyway, I ordered the blendmount for my detector (uniden r7) for the 2020 Z4. Everything is still in the box, if it doesn’t work, I will return it.

I will update at the end of the month when I am supposed to get my car....

Interesting, guess I need to wait to see my mirror. I kind of hope my mount from my GT-R would somehow fit, that would be nice.

Lol, ya, I am hoping the one bought for the Z4 will fit...

If we only had our cars...

Update: Blendmount now lists supplies specific to the Supra. I returned my Z4 setup and purchased the Supra model.

The look identical but they do have different part numbers on them....

1). Anyone have access to electrical diagrams for the rearview mirror?

There is nothing posted about the Supra yet, but looks like when using the mirrortap on BMWs some people are having to tap into their rain-sensing wiper lead (as their mirror only provides 9v), others are successful with tapping into the rear-view mirror power.

I am picking up my car Friday and have a little free time, was gonna hardwire the R7 for my drive home. Just trying to avoid, or at least narrow down, how many connections to test with the multi-meter.

Regardless, I will post my findings as to what leads provide enough juice, are grounded, and setup to accessory power.

2). Anyone know how to take the plastic cover off the mirror? Guessing just prying on it with a trim removal tool?

Have you had any luck with this?

I'm now debating on if I want to use blendmount as it seems like there would be very little space between the radar detector and the screen. Have you installed yours yet?

Great question. You are correct, there are space issues, but probably not what you were referring to.

My buddy and I messed around with it for about 30 minutes before I waved the white flag and stuck the suction cup mount on the windshield.

With the screen, the angle of the windshield, and the rearview mirror, it is quite cramped quarters trying to get the blendmount bracket mounted. I am going to have the shop that is installing my dashcam deal with the blendmount setup.

I was worried when I initially mounted the radar detector, as you are correct, there isn’t a lot of room. However, since mounting it, I have never felt like it infringed on my vision or otherwise obstructed my sight.

Right now, with the suction cup mount, it is blocking more real estate than it will with the blendmount, other than not looking clean, I could leave it as-is and it is not distracting at all.

I wonder what other mounting options there are?
I believe there is on that clips to your visor...not sure how it works if you need to use the visor, but is tucked out of the way.

Hardwired new radar detector last night - I installed the Escort X360c - Hardwired using this kit - see link below for Amazon. It is always on - which is a bummer but I could not get 12v that would shut off with the car even after locking the doors and waiting. (I believe this is plugged into the Rain \ temp sensor for the car) I am using the included suction cup installer - which I like so far. Its high enough up on the passenger side that it is not in anyone's line of sight - BUT it is low enough to detect rear radar. I tested the mount position last night and the detector itself. So far I am super impressed. My other unit is a Whistler CR90 in my FJ... which works. But this thing picked up police in the area from 1 mile on straight away. At first I thought it was a KA false alarm but as I drove I started to finally see the lights on the police car. Police is my area ALL drive with KA always ON - I dont know why ... but its a nice feature for them to let us know where they are all the time.

I set the radar to auto power off at 1 hour for now. The battery draw is really minimal - and I am trying to find an option for auto off for 0 MPH after X time.

I can post pics if anyone wants.

(Loved how easy it was so much - Ordered a similar model for my FJ Cruiser and the Whistler CR90 which also installed very easy)

Update:

Messed around with the Blendmount setup, which I ordered for the “speciality mirror,” as that is what the mirror setup on the Supra looks like....

However, turns out the diameter on the mount is to small to fit around the diameter of the mirror stalk.

Returned to Blendmount, ordered the “non-speciality” version off of Amazon, hopefully that one works...

What is the secret to getting the plastic cover off to access the wires by the mirror?

Rumor has it you need to tap into the rain-sensing wipers to only have power when the vehicle is on...

I don’t know where those wires are, but based on the BMW forums, it sounds like they are located with the other mirror wires...

No tool needed.... Just pried from the front top gently.... And it popped open. To describe where.... Right above the mirror up against the windshield.... Using fingers I was able to lightly pull and one side popped. Then just opened it up.
