Hello guys.

I have been lurking around and been eyeing the new supra ever since it was announced.

I currently have 3 cars and the plan is to reduce it down to 2 cars. The cars that i will get rid of in order to get the supra would be the '19 nismo 370z and a '16 ILX. I am hoping the supra can be like a combination of both. Being a nice comfortable daily like the ILX and be a sports car at the same time like the Z.

Before I pull the trigger, i'd like to hear from owners on how they think about the car now after having it for a few weeks.

How is it in daily driving conditions? I'd be driving it ~60 miles a day for my commute and while the morning drive is no problem cause i start early, it does consist of your typical LA traffic on my way home.

I have heard of people complain about the ridiculous wind buffeting(?) when driving with the windows down and want to know how bad it really is.

How does the ZF feel? Do you sometimes wish it was a MT or does it do a good job of still being fun without rowing through your own gears.

Are there anything you wish you knew about that you found out after purchasing the car?

I do plan on taking them out on a test drive but i haven't went by dealers yet so i'm not sure how willing they would be to give out test drives. When i bought my CTR a few years back when it first came out, it was impossible to find dealerships who allowed you to take it out on a test drive.

Thank you.

I don't drive my LE daily but I do drive it time to time of driving to work, getting groceries, and weekend cruises. I am impressed of how the car drives. In normal mode, the car drives like a normal car. Very smooth and quiet and great gas mileage. As soon as you kick it in sport mode, the car wakes up. The stock exhaust on the car sounds great and the pops you get on the downshifts. The ZF tranny feels and shifts great. It almost feel like a DCT.

Driving in traffic with the car in sport mode feels good. The car does not bog like the most DCT. The wind buffeting noise is kind of annoying as I like to drive with the windows when it's nice out. After awhile you kind of learn to mask out the noise. The car masks the speed very well. You are driving a lot faster than it feels. Supra can be a great daily if you want to daily it.

I doubt that you will be able to find a dealer that will let you test drive it. Most of them are pre-sold before getting to the dealership

It's wonderful in traffic; it rides well and is very quiet. I use the adaptive cruise control all the time. The only flaw is if traffic stops too long, you have to press the gas otherwise it won't move. It's some sort of safety feature.

Wind buffeting is pretty bad with both windows down all the way. I find if I open one window all the way and keep one window just cracked a bit, it solves the issue. Also, there will likely be cheap aftermarket solutions to it.

The ZF is very similar to an Audi DCT or BMW DCT. It's fast and responsive with the paddles but smoother than a dual clutch in normal driving.

I wish I had known that the horn sounded so stupid, but that is really about it.

Finally, I looked at CTR's a while back. Same deal with this car, "Oh, you know a potential customer will hate having miles on it. We'll let you test drive it once we sort out a deal and you're approved..." I doubt there is any way to get a test drive in this thing unless you know someone who owns one.

thank you very much for the responses.

At what speeds does the wind buffeting get pretty bad? I drive with both windows down most of the time so this was actually one of my main concerns.

I did find a premium trim at my local dealership and they allowed me to take a sit inside and stuff which was great. I've always been a fan of BMWs and the interior was nice and high quality. I was amazed on how small it felt inside once you sat down though.
They had a mark up on it which was they were willing to remove if i made the decision that day but i wasn't ready to fully do it yet (probably was just some sales tactic to get me interested either way as i didn't even talk pricing with the guy yet) . They wouldn't let me take it out on a test drive though. I was hoping they would due to it being a non LE but i guess it's still rather rare in numbers so they don't.

I bought the CTR without a test drive but i really want to feel how the ZF transmission is.

I was originally going to wait a year or so before purchasing the car cause i didn't want to go through the insane hassle with dealers again (finding the CTR really wasn't a pleasant experience) but seeing it in person just made me want one much earlier lol.

Wind buffeting will start around 50mph and up. I noticed that if I kept one window a little more than halfway closed, it won't do it or it would be less.

You can definitely find one at MSRP. A lot of dealerships around my area are starting to sell at MSRP or lowering their adm. I got mine for MSRP.

I also bought my CTR without a test drive, but the car turned out to be awesome, lol. No regrets. The Supra is actually pretty boring to me. ZF is pretty smooth. Car is great for daily driving. Not much room though. All the dealerships I went to won't let you test drive.

hey sweet another CTR owner lol. I definitely don't regret that purchase.
Not too worried about the amount of room in the car since if i need to i can fit a butt load of stuff in the CTR.

TBH i wouldn't mind buying the supra without a test drive also if it was a MT. I just want to really see if i'll be happy with the ZF transmission. I've never really bought or even thought i'd buy a "sports car" in AT form so it's why i'm a little hesitant to purchase without a test drive.

One of the reasons why i'm leaning towards having only two car is because the CTR or the Z only gets driven on the weekends and ILX takes most of the miles from my commute so i been recently feeling a little wasteful on having 3 cars. I was thinking the supra would be a good combination of being a nice comfortable DD and a sports car.

I think it's time to see what kind of offers carmax will give me for my 2 cars and see!

Thanks.

Go drive a M240i with the auto. Its the same ZF gearbox but the Supra's is better.

I don't know what dealer wouldn't let you take the car out for a test drive... that's just plain ridiculous. Yes, let me buy this car without driving and find out it handles like shit, uncomfortable, etc, etc... I would tell the dealer to go pound sand and get off his high horse and remind him it's a Toyota and not a Ferrari

yeah ... i know what you mean. I definitely need to test drive one before i decide on this car.

Though i do understand from their perspective too. Too many people likes to take it for a test drive with no intention of ever buying it.

Didn't someone from the VA press day event say that the Supras used by the press were going to be shipped to some Toyota dealers to be used as a demo car?

You can test drive any BMW M40i model to get a good idea of the Supra's powertrain and flavor. The differences are so minor that as a BMW enthusiast the Supra felt at home and extremely familiar to me. In terms of the B58 and ZF8 combination, it's like 95% BMW flavor with 5% Toyota spices sprinkled on top.

I love the ZF 8-speed and have owned it in three BMWs now, but nobody will mistake it for a DCT and it lacks the engagement and involvement of a manual transmission. I happen to think the ZF8 is about as good as it gets for a torque-converter automatic, but it's still an automatic. If you're OK with that, great!

Handling/steering is where you'll get a unique feel from the Supra. Not as stiff as an M car but more athletic than an M-sport model. It's an ideal combination for a daily driver I think. Better electric power steering feel than BMW can manage aside from a few M cars.

The Supra will not be as comfortable as your ILX in the sense that it's low and the seating position and visibility are not in the same category. I think the Supra is comfortable in it's own right, but it's not a sedan.

Hello.
That is the plan next weekend. Going to swing by some BMW dealers to take out the M240i for a test drive. I've always looked into BMWs but never really purchased one so this might be the chance to get into one albeit branded a toyota lol.

The ZF Auto does make me a little hesitant but i have also seen people rave about them so i want to really see for myself.
Since it's mainly going to be used to commute, the AT will be nice in the really lame traffic we get around here.

I actually thought about getting a sporty sedan to replace them both but I felt like i'm going to miss the sports car feel with the Z gone.
Also thought it'd be kind of pointless to replace it with a sedan when i have a hatch already.

I went from a S2000 to a 370z so i'm used to the visibility/seating position of a sports car so i'm hoping it's ok. I sat in one yesterday and it felt great and the seats are much more comfortable as they're not really buckets like the seats in my nismo.

I think the Supra will be a great buy
It has proven itself and I have heard a lot of great things about the new Supra
I haven't gotten a chance to drive yet but I would love to see how it drives
The ZF is really good and gives an engaging experience as an auto but even I would say a manual transmission would be nice for the Supra
And I think having the CTR and Supra would be a good combo like that would be awesome

It is a great daily commute car. The ZF transmission is quick and seems to always find the right gear. The car is very comfortable to drive in LA traffic. Wind buffetting is a real issue.

So did you test drive any BMW's to get a feel for the powertrain? Are you going to get a Supra?
