The MKIV vs MKV Thread

For those with mkiv's, will you be selling yours to get a mkv?

We have a saying in my language (translated), "not every crazy person has to be wearing a straitjacket."
Buying a high-value older vehicle is almost never a rational or a sane decision, it is driven by our emotion and passion. The goal is to make an informed decision, especially when it comes to appreciating assets.

I can ask $100k+ for my pet rock too....doesn't mean there will be a line outside my house of people wanting to buy it.

Once the MKV cracks 1000hp, MKIV demand will start going down.....just my opinion before anyone goes nuts on this thread.

I had both, and I loved my MKIV. It was just a pain. I had to move a bunch of cars to take the car out and put it away. I was scared somebody would snatch it. MKIV is roomier, but both are powerful and smooth rides. I would love to have a MKIV to drive around randomly to enjoy manual again, but I would get way more use out of the MKV due to updated tech. MKIV prices are pretty bonkers especially for an NA and don't even get me started on RHD prices

Right, like I said... an informed decision. This includes the seller too if they're actually trying to sell the vehicle. There's modified MKIV's that are actually selling in the six figures range.

Time will tell, but IMO the MKV power figures will have little to no impact on MKIV values. In fact, the MKIV's that are selling for top dollar today are completely stock.

Power figures def have ZERO impact on MKIV. Simple way to prove that, how come GTE swapped cars don't fetch high amounts. Its all about the body with the MKIV. When I was shopping for mine at the time, I only wanted a bone stock all vins intact, clean title example. Those are hard to come by for a reasonable amount

Not to confuse modified with swapped cars. Original TT 6 speed cars always have the highest value with all original cars bringing the most money. That said, modified cars can still bring six figures.

Yeah I consider modified as pure w58 or v160 even v161, with the GE or GTE engine. I can see how modified examples will still bring in six figures. I honestly would rather an all original example (Quicksilver or RSP) vs a HP freak for 6 figures.

You're not the only one :) IIRC, that's why bone stock examples have sold for as high as $180k and modified examples hover around sub-$130k mark for prime examples. This is usually the case in the collector car market.

The MKV can crack 3000hp, but it will still have no impact on the demand for the MKIV. I've said this multiple times, BUT NO ONE IS CROSS SHOPPING THESE CARS. They are completely different cars and most rational people know and understand this. No offense, but your post just seem anti-mkiv for as long as I can remember. I own 2 mkiv's and they are amazing machines in both stock and modified form. Do I think it's the greatest car ever? Far from it, but for the time it was glorious and it has held up against the test of time for performance and looks wise. I also don't hate on the MKV and i'm excited to get behind the wheel of one and possibly purchase one down the road.

I agree. MKIV harks back to a different time. Itā€™s desirability is based on reputation. I honestly donā€™t know what drives MKV sales at the moment other than hype lol.

I donā€™t hate the MKIV nor am I anti-MKIV, so please stop putting words in my mouth and trying to start another worthless thread of BS. I am curious what statement I made ā€œseemsā€ anti-MKIV? I, however, do believe (for obvious reasons) that most MKIV owners I have encountered both on and offline, are the most single minded individuals when it comes to any other car. Rather than appreciate Toyotaā€™s move of introducing an awesome sports car platform in a otherwise dying market....MKIV owners shit on the MKV for what it is, and at the end of the day call themselves enthusiasts. I personally believe itā€™s to try and keep the resale value high in their cars...ā€protecting their investment.ā€ (here comes the cavalry)

Iā€™m happy you are enthusiastic about your MKIV and the MKV....because you are definitely not a typical MKIV owner.

Just curious what this ā€œreputationā€ is that you speak of. Please, inform me what major factor gave the MKIV itā€™s reputation? I really want to know...because before the MKIV made 1000hp on YouTube channels, no one looked twice at them.
