For those with mkiv's, will you be selling yours to get a mkv?

You guys are still freaking out over 5 inches

5 inches is actually very significant. You are telling me visually there isn't a difference of somebody who is 5'5 vs somebody who is 6'. The corvette base vs the grand sport rear end is about 2 inch difference and it shows. The Carrera vs the Carrera 4S is a noticeable difference as well in the rear. If you personally don't notice a difference or matters then kudos to you.

The FT-1 measures 184 inches long with a 107.9-inch wheelbase. The Supra, however, only measures 172.5 inches long with a wheelbase measuring at 97.2 inches. The FT-1 is 7 inches longer than the MKIV which even that is huge. Not you are trimming an entire foot vs the MKV. FT1 def made the expectation high. When I show people the side profile and rear of MKV they say it's nice, and don't understand why I was having a titty attack. Then I show them the FT1 side profile and rear, and they immediately say "Yeah I get it now"

I plan to go to Toyota this weekend to see the Supra in person, but it's going to have to be pretty special to beat the LC500. I fell in love with that car and seeing it in person is just as amazing. I'm hoping the MKV has that same affect on me
I LOVE the LC500! Depending on what color Supra you see you will definitely appreciate it looks too. Car does look better in person and certain colors present it very well.

I think the prices on the JDM Supras are starting to climb because people from all around the world are importing them, not just the US. And out of the 31,575 JDM A80s how many have survived? Google Toyota Supra front cut :(
Jesus Christ, tell me about it.:cry::cry: You can barely even find a decent front cut anymore.

Again, more power to you for not caring visually about it making a difference.
Sheesh, if 5 inches bothers you that much than you can always strip on a yellow dildo onto your head and front bumper. :p

But seriously, seeing the two side by side it wasn't that big of a differences. Let's stop acting like the MKIV is a size of a Challenger and the MKV tiny like a Miata. :nixon:

I'm not really freaking out about it lol. I have to see it in person first, but I think the thing that throws me off the most about the car is the short wheelbase. I haven't seen it in person, so I may change my tune once that happens. I still think the car looks a little "smushed" and could have benefited from using a larger chassis to capture the FT-1 proportions better
The car does look kind of bubbly and smooshed in pictures.

In person, it's a lot lower, wider and cohesive. The design language flows a lot better and it's a seriously good looking car. I have always liked the design from pics - but thought it needed a bit of work.

Once I saw the white in person, I was kinda floored on how dramatically better they look in person. There is definitely lots of FT1 in the car.

60k is way to conservative, I would guess more like 100k minimum.
The v6TT was a far more expensive engine to develop and to produce, so I'd expect added cost there as well if we were using that (Lexus politics aside).

So ultimately it would end up being a completely different segment entirely, but as you said perhaps many desired that.
Ding ding ding ding. Personally I would have loved to see this car at a whole different segment with a Toyota drivetrain, even if it means a $100k+ price tag. But ultimately it is what it is.. That said, I actually like the way exterior looks, just wish it didn't have the fake vents.

But here's the problem: Toyota is a business, car doens't sell = car goes bye-bye. What normal person would buy a 100k+ Toyota? For all we know its engine could have been made of glass, it could have looked worse than the real car, it could have been auto only, it could have handled like crap, etc. Just because you use the words, "Well Toyota could have done it themselves," doesn't a good car make. Just remember, the NSX exists, barely.

I agree. MKIV harks back to a different time. Itā€™s desirability is based on reputation. I honestly donā€™t know what drives MKV sales at the moment other than hype lol.
Probably
Yeah I also think it's the wheelbase that is throwing people off. I saw one last week and it looks pretty good for a $50k car imo (minus stupid BMW mirrors). That's the thing I hate about concepts. They usually look nice and pretty but the final product us almost always watered down. It also didn't help that the people over Calty said they purposely enlarged the concept car for stage presence.
Then there's the thing about Calty wanting to make it as wide as a Lambo(which is why the the door vents are there)

Your wish is somewhat coming true with the GR Super Sport

^^ Agree. I've been able to spend some time studying two LE's up close at my local dealer and this really does ring true. Yes, you think about the wheelbase a bit but when you start walking around it the proportions make sense. And it is wide. It gives a strong sense of being grounded and stable at speed while the rest of the looks take off with the various curves. MKVs have really beautiful overall shapes and proportions up close at any angle.

Then again so do MKIVs, just with different proportions and an earlier evolution of Toyota's styling language.

It would have been nice if the new car were more that 2+2 grand tourer layout but I get the direction they wanted to take it in this time. They intended their 2+2 layout RWD coupe with a slightly longer wheelbase for the GT86. When you look at an MKV and a GT86 head on however the MKV is clearly the more dominating of the two.

The LC500 is a totally different masterpiece all on its own. I love that car. It's like an ultimate reimagined version of my SC. I'm actually surprised they didn't use the "SC" name for it because everything about that car screams that it's an homage to the first gen Lexus coupes. Or they could have just called it "Soarer" for once ;)

But the LC500 chassis isn't and wasn't ever going to be a "Supra" chassis.

From the perspective of Tetsuya Tada and also his mentor Isao Tsuzuki who was the chief engineer of the MKIV the 1993-2002 model was limited by the top brass requiring its design be based on the Z30 Soarer / Lexus SC platform. Tsuzuki wanted it to be a shorter wheelbase car back in 1992 but was overruled and was forced to keep it a 2+2. However I think we can all agree the resulting A80 was great and an instant classic!

Tetsuya Tada seemed to want to carry forward that longstanding desire to make a new generation Supra a shorter wheelbase two seater that moved away from the big GT sportscar interpretation and into a far more focused sportscar interpretation. Given that the circumstances seemed to support him in that goal this time around.

Anyway, I really love the MKV up close. In pictures the lensing used flattens it out a bit. It's a sports car designed to be experienced in person.

A side question for A70TTR: Tada-san has spoken many times about Isao Tsuzuki and his work as the MKIV's chief engineer but I have also read that a man named Nobuaki Katayama was the MKIV's chief engineer and I don't know if that's accurate. Do you know anything about how Tsuzuki and Katayama's involvement in the MKIV/A80 project differed and where they converged?

Iā€™m probably in the minority here, but I never cared for the MKIV but am buying an MKV.

Didnā€™t bother me that much since I ended up getting one. But send me some of your dildos you donā€™t use anymore so can slap them on my bumper though.
