Hello everyone,

so I will preface by saying I had my car delivered without its navigation system activated. I had it fixed in approximately two days at a dealer different from the one I bought the car at. Detailed below is the complete process required to activate the navigation from my information from early August 2019.

When your car is taken off the trailer, it arrives in transport mode. During the PDI, they deactivate transport mode and activate the navigation system.

Activation of the nav system requires a code to be input into the car using Toyota's computer that only techs can use.

The way this works is that the tech submits a request to this website https://www.toyota-tech.eu/navigation/supra/login. This sends a request to BMW in Germany who then approve for the navigation code. The tech will receive an e-mail immediately after they submit the request which gives an estimated time for the activation code's arrival. This code is only functional for a period of several days after which another code will need to be requested and the process repeated.

These requests are processed four times a day in Germany's time. I can't remember what they are specifically, but it's along the lines of 9:00, 12:00, 1:45, and 4:00 (don't use these for actual planning, they are just what I can remember). The process can take up to 3 days.

Now, ideally, the dealer who receives the car should be responsible for activating the navigation as it is officially part of the PDI process.

However, the only thing needed to actually submit the navigation request is the vehicle's VIN which does not seem to be linked to any specific dealership. In my case, I ended up activating my navigation at a dealership that I did not buy the car from. I should note that the tech told me that since the navigation activation is part of the PDI, they are not paid to fix your car. The only reason they would is if they're being nice.

The process I used to activate the navigation was I first stopped by on a weekday to my local dealership and spoke to their Supra specialist and asked if he could do it. He agreed and we submitted for the activation code request. The email he received estimated it would arrive at 1:45 the next day. I left and dropped the car off the following afternoon but he did not have time that evening so I picked it up the next morning and everything functioned perfectly.

Sounds like some dude on his lunch break looks at a list of submitted VINs, compares the list to approved key list and clicks ok and processes these whenever. No automation whatsoever... is it the 80's?

Very frustrating, dealer told me they received an email saying it would be activated on the 19th (August). Coincidently, that is the day the car was delivered to the dealership.

They keep saying that it should be activated automatically any day now....

It seems strange to me, as based on the communication above, it could take up to 3 days to get the activation key, then it sounds like the car needs to be hooked back up to the software.

I am picking the car up Friday and have a 1,000 mile road trip home, I really want it activated by then. After I get home, the closet Toyota Dealer is over 2 hours away....I really donā€™t wanna make another trip just to get navigation turned on.

Any advice? Am I correct that the car has to be at the dealer to be activated or will it really magically just start working?

Is it possible that the day they got it delivered they received the key and activated it but it didnā€™t turn on yet?

Is there something that they did that would lead them to think they completed the activation, but are missing a step or two??

More frustration.

Does activation affect only the navigation part or does it affect the whole operation of the HMI?

I just had mine done, took 5 minutes. My selling dealer activated in network and see the "key" to my local dealer and as I said , 5 minutes.

Also just FYI as I am having the side reflectors ( orange ones) painted to match, 28 dollars each side, 2 weeks out but ordered)

Prior to that, what did your screen display when you hit the navigation button?

It said " needs activation code, please insert USB...."
Mine too.

I emailed the dealership again today. I attached the activation procedure, as well as my reasoning why I did not think it would work as they told me (they claimed to have done everything in one day, over a week later nav still wasnā€™t working, they also said it would activate on its own).

They replied back, ā€œOur tech did everything correctly, just come in and we will activate it.ā€

Lol, that reply was fine with me, as I am guessing they will take care of it when I stop in. However, the same guy told me yesterday that I just needed to wait until it activated on itā€™s own.

I am hopeful.

I am having the same issue, bought the car 2 weeks ago and taken the vehicle to another dealership and still cannot get the navi activated. Is this something I can do myself by following the map activation above? I am getting tired of taking the car to the dealership and waiting hours for them to tell me that it they can't fix it because my vin is registered with the dealership I purchased it from. Anyone successfully get their navi activated themselves?

You cant. Your dealer has to order the codes from Germany.

Yep, you will have to have the dealer do it, you cannot make an account yourself. Unless things have changed, any dealer should be able to unlock the nav.

Took mine in to the dealer to activate my navigation and they were having troubles getting the car to accept the code. So now gotta wait for Monday for their engineer from corporate to come down and help investigate the issue.
