I gotta say, with each new rumor that surfaces, I am getting increasingly turned off at the thought of this car being called a Supra. I am on board with this as the next Celica (hope the Celica makes a comeback as well) however. The dimensions, overall design, engine output seems to be more condussive for a reborn Celica of the modern era.

A Supra should not be the result of a cost-cutting development program but one that showcases Toyota's unparalleled performance capabilities much like what was demonstrated during the nineties. A new Toyota wearing the Supra badge should truly be an aspirational, awwinspiring low production and exclusive vehicle more in line with the performance output of the GTR or NSX ( I would like an overachieving, competitive Supra for Corvette-GTR money).

No Supra ever deserves to be given a 4-banger for its heart. Output should start around 400 hp with top end versions north of 500.

The Supra name is an icon. This car we have been teased specs for (whether real or not) does not deserve to bear the flagship, Supra moniker.

This project in recent weeks has been a letdown. The original concept appeared to have the right porportions, design language and the promise of something special.

I would hate to see the Supra name and legend tarnished with something that does not elude the greatest of accomplishments and performance. Replace the 86 with this, call it Celica and be done with it.
I agree with a lot of your points, but the test car does appear to be around the same size as the MKIV.

X2, the thought of a 4 banger "Supra"

A comparison from another forum. The prototype does appear to be larger than the 86.

Not thrilled that Toyota didn't develop and use its own engine for a Supra, but if you're looking for a silver lining at least the aftermarket is already robust for the BMW engines.

I wish someone could delete this thread. How recent was those code posted. why would Toyota let BMW give out information about there car(Yes I know they working together but still it don't make sense) the only way this is true is if the FT1 is the new celica.

These codes were posted within the last few months, so not that long ago. And the J29 Supra shows up in the BMW model codes list because they're co-developing it with Toyota, so it's not as if BMW needs permission from Toyota to list the car in their own private internal document containing all models they're working on (and worked on). Just so happens this internal doc got leaked.

I like big rear ends and I cannot lie.

There is no proof this doc is legit. Hell if I was PR for the relaunch of an Icon...I'd stir the pot with as much crap as possible to get interest in my new product.

I mentioned this in another thread, but it's very difficult to compare images to represent scale because there is a fairly large amount of perspective change based off of camera sensor size and zoom distance (bg compression).

FWIW, the MKIV and the 86 are fairly similar sizes, but the 86 has a longer wheelbase, and the Supra has longer overhangs (that's why people think it's bigger). When you put them side by side though, they look the same more or less. I can only imagine that the MKV will be roughly the same wheelbase as the 86 and perhaps a little bit bigger to accommodate the longer hood and potentially more interior space.

This is an old photo in my driveway that shows how the MKIV Supra tends to look larger than the 86, despite similar dimensions. The width and exaggerated features (like the headlights) play a big role in that.

Regardless if it is true of not, this thread has given this forum quite a bit of exposure over the week.

Yeah these overlap comparisons aren't 100% accurate. But the press release did say it will be a midsize sports car. I actually think the MK5's wheelbase will be shorter than the 86's 101.2 inch simply because its based on the Z platform. The E85 @98.2 inches and the E89 @98.3 inches.

Like Guff said, the overall length differences between the 86 and MK4 is less than 11 inches. But the internet experts almost always make it sound like the 86 is tiny like the 1st gen Miata and the Supra huge like a Dodge Challenger.

spot on about the wheel base,

from this pic one can see that the tire used for that mule is 225/50 R17, so it has a diameter of 658mm
i looked for the most "perpendicular" view of the side profile, using that tire/wheel above; i couldn't get a better angle than this pic

with a ruler on my screen (LOL) i measured the on screen diam of the tire (which i know is ~658mm in reality) and the distance between the center of the wheels hub caps, it turned out the wheelbase is roughly ~98.7 in! this puts it between the 86 (101.2in) and the 991.2 911 (96.7in)

though; don't quote me on the exact figure, i zoomed in to try to get as accurate as i can get, but the shot i used is not perfectly perpendicular to the side profile.
