Service tech called. They know what happened.

The headlight shorted out which blew out a ballast which blew out the “body ECU” which controls all the body lighting/electrical etc...

They’re waiting on parts and are trying to get help from Toyota but they have no idea when.

Additional update - apparently they’re only waiting on the ECU but there’s no ETA.

They called today, still waiting on the ECU.

Told me they have the car on a lift to keep anything from happening to it. Nice of them.

Likely won’t have it until next week. Hopefully not much longer.

No update today from the dealer. Hopefully I’ll hear something tomorrow. Sick of my Camry loaner...

I got this text a few minutes ago from my service advisor. First contact since last Thursday.

“It has been a little weird lately. we received the parts but waiting still on programing for the ecu.
I did find out that there is a problem with others having the light ballast take out the ecu. I think Toyota is changing the programing in the ecu to accept it. I will keep you posted as soon as I know something.
Thanks”

Doesn’t sound like I’m getting it back soon. Monday will be two weeks since I took it in.

Yeah, one member chimed in on this thread that he had the issue but intermittently.

I’m still waiting, haven’t heard a peep since Friday morning (it’s Tuesday night).

Car has been at the dealer for 16 days.

I bet they guessed what it needed and it didn’t fix it. No techs have been trained except for pre delivery process. The bmw training has been postponed because they still aren’t ready.
No. That’s not it.

Interesting development.

I spoke with the service manager. He says that the new ECU needs firmware that can only be extracted from the old ECU using their scantool. Apparently it’s not working and hasn’t been sorted out by Toyota engineering and BMW.

He said he was trying to get the car flatbedded to a local BMW dealer to see if their tools will work but BMW won’t permit them to even try.

Bottom line, it could be up to six months for a solution to get the tools in place to make this happen.

My car only has 350 miles so we’re talking about a replacement Supra and they’re looking for vehicles. Nutty situation but the dealer has been great.

You seem like a patient dude but this is UNACCEPTABLE.

Can’t do anything about it. Seems like a corner case that they need to sort out. Bleeding edge early adopters are we.

I’m not thrilled with the logistics of a new vehicle. Will need to swap registration and make sure the county doesn’t have both cars assessed for personal property taxes. Will need to swap out the SiriusXM radio ID. Will need to change VIN for insurance. Will need to figure out the same for the bank loan. I don’t even want to contemplate the Toyota warranties - hoping I don’t need to cancel and start from scratch.

I hope the short isnt coming from the gap between the headlights and fender. If it is then everyones going to have the same issue sooner or later

Not sure which gap you mean, if you’re referring to the side where most cars have the wonky tolerance, that’s on the opposite side.

Its on both headlights. If you look at the outermost edges of the headlight, theres gaps on the left and right side

I understand you now. My confusion was if you were referring to that design element or the fact that the passenger side has a gap in the hood/body panel.

I know it’s a long thread so you may not have noticed but this happened the first time the car was in rain. Possibly coincidence, possibly water getting places it shouldn’t.

Service manager called today. Directed me to open a case with Toyota CEC. Once a case agent is assigned they’ll go about finding me a new vehicle. Not sure why he didn’t have me do this last Friday. We’ll see how long it takes. The car will be at the dealer a month on Monday.
