My understanding is that Magna Steyr simply does the final assembly, more or less - they wouldn't be doing any major sub-assemblies manufacture at all, things like rear suspension cradle, front suspension assemblies and the steering components, drivetrain, interior/dashboard, will all be made by the regular Toyota suppliers. At best MagnaSteyr will be stamping the panels and welding them, and the robotic plant setup and adjusted by the Toyota engineers will be responsible for the welding.
I'm not super fussed by this plan - there is not way in hell that Toyota will allow Supra to have reliability issues.

I believe that would be the case also but I question the rumor altogether. Magna Steyr currently builds the Mini Countryman and Paceman for BMW and the word is they've decided to move production of it to the Netherlands and have Magna build another model which everyone is assuming is the Z5. The BMW-Magna link makes sense but I think Toyota/Supra got pulled into this rumor just based on the shared platform development. I'm not sure there's anything else to it other than that.....hopefully we find out soon.

I like big rear ends and I cannot lie.
As discussed in many threads, I'll put up a poll. Will it be a Supra if Toyota gives it the name but it's made by BMW? Is it a Supra if it's got a Toyota drive train?

Several RWD's
true! built by BMW or otherwise, it has to live up to the Supra heritage regardless. the shared platform of 86 nailed that point, but the pure Honda/Acura NSX did not.

Some people will always having something to say when it comes to things like this. If Toyota had developed this by themselves and it turns out crap, people will still say its not a Supra. If this joint venture turns out amazing, people will say its because of BMW's assistance. If the Supra name wasn't used, people will complain and clamor for another product to carry that name. It's a lose-lose. Ultimately, there will always be some sort of excuse.

Manufactures sharing money and resources develop a product carries such a negative stigma. There have been plenty of examples where great results were achieved. It's just the way the current automotive industry has evolved, and the product will evolve with it.

There are no guarantees either way. Time will tell if this "Supra" turns out a success or not. However, there's a lot to appreciate already.

I just hope there is no 4-cylinder version for the flagship Toyota! However a new 4wd turbo four for the comeback of the Celica would be fantastic! Perhaps when the 86 is due for a replacement. I would love to see a new Celica that follows the same design philosophy as the fifth and six gen Celicas.

Since it is made by BMW, it should be called a BMW Supra.

If the looks, performance and reliability are there I don't really care what the name is. I don't feel disliking BMW or another brand makes you more or less of an enthusiast or a Toyota fan, Akio likes BMW, their M division, and so forth. Toyota wants to compete with M and AMG etc. The conflicting part is that the structure of the Toyota model line up will have to change to include their various trim levels, the top model, and then special focused hardcore versions for buyers who want the lightest, most powerful, track ready car with a manual. Lexus has F which many feel still miss the mark and are not extreme enough, (too heavy, no manual) but time will tell.

Just finish it, call it whatever you want and start selling it, I'll take the Turbo GT3 version with a manual.

Same thing with the GT86....
The AE86 back then was a car with a character....
Initial D, Mountain drift and touge,....
The current model for me is just a Subaru sports coupe.... Not saying its not a good car. Just NOT worthy of the 86 badge...
Same with the Supra if it follows the same path and is a Z4 coupe with different bumpers...
