I get that Toyota need to leave space between the 4 pot Supra and the next 86... Makes me wish they had kept the Supra B58 only, then there would be more room for a turbo 86 with 250-260 HP.

Unfortunately, I am not sure a 220HP gen 2 86 makes a compelling case for an upgrade to current owners, particularly if the new car is heavier. We shall see!
Can't they squeeze 100hp/litre out of an NA FA24? Basically Honda S2000 top end power but with much more low end and mid range torque.

The people running all those car websites still think this prototype is just a facelift lol.

I mean who the hell would introduce a facelifted version of a car that is already this late into its lifecycle?
Bear in mind, the new 86 could still be 3+ years away... just remember how long the Supra took. If the next gen 86 comes out approximately 10 years after gen I, then it isn't due until 2022 or so at the earliest. In such a situation, I can well imagine Toyobaru putting out a final swansong edition of the existing car to try and keep sales ticking along until the new one is ready for sale.

Obviously, this may not be the case, and the mule that has been spotted could be testing elements of the next gen car. We just don't know at this early stage.

What I do like is the fact they are bench-marking it against both the MX-5 and the Alpine A110. Both are ultra light, ultra responsive drivers' cars. So hopefully that means they are keeping whatever it is, whether existing gen special edition or next gen, as the same type of lightweight handling car.

Toyota. The 86 just got a new nose for 2019, the BRZs is still from 2017. Gotta do something to keep it selling till the replacement arrives.

^^ It definitely needs to be nimble, light and VERY tossable like the generation 1 cars so if he is working on improving on that formula it can only be good for the 86. He'll need to retain the 6-speed manual gearbox option and standard LSD to keep the small low powered car "fun" though.

Further if they actually *have* decided on the Ascent's 2.4L turbo boxer engine they can detune it to 217hp and actually gain something that the FA20 NA engine doesn't have: low end torque and midrange power. Plus IF it comes out as a factory turbo 86 even with that low stock horsepower it will be much easier to tune out of the box.

The 86 should be exceptionally fun to drive and rotate more than anything else. But the MKV is an expression of "fun to drive" in a different way. Maybe it's differentiated in a mission of "fun to drive really, really fast".

for me the 2.4 turbo or not is not the ideal engine. I would take the new 1.8 turbo , or the 1.6 turbo with some 220+ hp and the reasons are emmissions and lightness. But i am strongly hoping for a turbo for easy access to more power.

Moving back to a Toyota Chassis!!! WIN!

Keeping the hated Subaru boxer?? Why. They even have their own turbo 4 in production that already makes that kind of power.

^^ Probably for the same reason that they used the FA20 for the first gen 86: it’s short, perfect for a RWD layout and being a flat engine allows for a low hood line.

And all of that made it much easier to keep the short wheelbase and make the car a 2+2 rather than a two-seater.

Packaging is one of the main reasons why the Supra A90 was made as a two-seater rather than as a 2+2 like the GT86.

The second generation will need to continue offering a 2+2 layout.
