Only viable reason is laziness of developers as the story is it's easier to program iOS and as there are less unique Apple products on the market making it easier to control/program/debug, nonetheless this is also not acceptable as most US OE's support both and it's not like German OE's employ much fewer people...

Its mad that Android isn't supported!

I'm going to have to get an old iPhone and chuck a sim in it so I can use spotify etc.
For clarification,
You can still play your android music via bluetooth or usb. apple carplay is like an app in your dash that allows you to mirror IOS.

Yeah - I have android auto on one of my other cars and its brilliant using spotify on the screen, and waze for navigation.

Annoyingly our Aygo company car has android auto on it, so Toyota def have the tech - just BMW have it locked down so it cant be used.

this is probably my LARGEST gripe with this car. I have nothing Apple, and will never have anything Apple. Android OS is on more devices that iOS. and android is most of the cell market, which is why i don't understand why they would opt for apple.
Hate to repeat myself, but being a mobile developer I deal with this reality every day. If you think Android is the dominant platform it means you are not understanding how it's deployed worldwide. The vast majority of Android installs are on devices or in markets that don't mean jack to companies like Toyota and BMW. I can see how BMW customers are probably biased to iOS, but I'd expect Toyota to be a more even split between iOS and Android or maybe even Android biased. Thing is, Toyota is not in control of the infotainment software on the Supra so they have to follow BMW's lead.

In fairness to BMW, their CarPlay implementation is excellent. On my X3 M40i, it uses wifi for connectivity, so no cable needed and wifi's audio quality is far far superior to what BlueTooth can do.

It's really not that hard to implement the other once one is done. Almost all headunits except for the first few Pioneer Appradios support both Carplay and AA. The most recent ones support Android Auto Wireless too. Not making one available really hurts a manufacturer's sales considerably in my opinion, specially if it's not possible to install an aftermarket unit. Toyota realized this now and I'm almost certain BMW will start rolling out cars that support both in the very near future.

Toyota is deploying Android Auto support later this year, but it's only for: 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Aygo (EU), and Yaris (EU)

He responded and said, I have heard that, wait until it comes out with an update in our internal system. Once I see it there at work I'll let y'all know. That will have official info. So nothing official official yet on how/what/when/where.

Here you go guys, for BMW though.

Starting on December 4, 2019, BMW is extending the Apple CarPlay Compatibility option for many BMW vehicles that are technically-capable for CarPlay.

In general the extension affects the following vehicles:

  • All MY2019 and MY2020 vehicles, which were equipped with Apple CarPlay with 1-year trial of CarPlay as new vehicles from the factory. All of these MY2019 and MY2020 vehicles, including vehicles where the customers purchased CarPlay from the ConnectedDrive Store as a 1 year renewal, will be extended to a 20 year term for CarPlay. There is no change to the vehicles where customers purchased a 20-year term as no extension is needed
  • All MY2018 and MY2017 vehicles, where the customer purchased CarPlay from the ConnectedDrive Store as a 1 year term, will be extended to the 20 year term. For customers who purchased a 20 year term, no extension is needed

This extension will be at no additional cost to the customer, and there is no action required on the customer’s part to receive the extension.

Due to the volume of vehicles that this change affects, it may take several weeks for all customer vehicles to be updated.
