I’m pretty new to all this, so take this into account, but I believe a piggyback tune allows you to remove it, as not to void the warranty when you take the car in for repairs/maintenance etc

Nothing is completely undetectable. JB4 intercepts a handful of values from a litany of sensors. If you have a big enough warranty claim and Toyota goes looking, they will likely find a trace of the piggyback somewhere.

At the end of the day you should go in with the mindset of pay to play.

Hello,

The above response is correct however, the PiggyBack won't leave a count on the ECU so when you take the car for simple repairs and warranty work they will be unlikely to flag your VIN as being modified.

We have installed these for employees of dealerships, if that gives you any further reassurance. :)

However, you will make more power on a flash such as BM3, which we also sell.

Is BM3 trackable? Do you have to revert it back to factory setting everytime you take it in for warranty work?

All Flash tunes (BM3, MHD, EcuTek, etc) leave a count on the ECU regardless of flashing it back to stock. A PiggyBack does no effect the count on the ECU.

The big question is - will the dealer actually look for it or do they want the warranty money for the work? I'm betting on the latter

Theres a dude on supraforums that’s a lead mechanic at a Toyota dealership, and he pretty much said if a mkv comes in he’s pretty much gunna try and find a reason to void your warranty.

That's pretty shitty. Hopefully he's an outlier

There are a few ways to "hide" a tune from your dealer. If you're able to return your vehicle to its stock tune with your tuning device and then complete a full drive cycle of anywhere from 50 to 100 miles (depending on the vehicle and its modifications), then your past tune generally won't be detected at a dealership level. While that's all well and good, you're going to have a hell of a time completing a drive cycle with a hole in your block from a thrown rod while pouring oil everywhere except where it needs to be. While you may have heard that discharging your battery completely in the event of totally blown motor can also hide a tune, that's sill remarkably fishy, and any dealership worth a damn is going to send your vehicle's computer off to Toyota for further analysis. Which brings me to my second point: even if you do manage to sneak a tune past your dealership, you won't get it past Toyota itself. If Toyota requests a ECU be sent to them in regards to a warranty claim, they'll go through its software and firmware line by line, piece of code by piece of code, and if there's anything there to find, they will find it, and it's going to ruin your day. You may say "But this dude on the forum got away with it!" Good for them, but the risk is always there.

The guy is a fucking moron. Trash talking his employer’s distributor on a public forum with a ton of identifying information. I haven’t even paid real attention to this jackass and I know way more than I should about this fool.

What happens when someone in his location reads his drivel and decides to dig so they don’t lose warranty for no reason other than he is jealous that is toy is now old.

This guy’s whole career could go to shit because he has the maturity of a ten year old and is essentially daring the internet at this point.

Hell, Toyota is even calling us for opinions and he trolls here. Several people dropping that on a survey would get Toyota’s attention pronto. How can one be so stupid and not even know the depths of one’s own stupidity?
