Finally got around doing a single step polish in the car months after. Since Toyota said my paint defect is “Normal”

Now it sticks out like a sore thumb. This is definitely not normal at all

So you or the dealership have pictures of the car from before you purchased to compare?

brother I’d fight this battle for you if I could, but you’re going to have to make a stink with the dealer and corporate until you get it resolved, because that’s not okay

I have pictures when I purchased the car, but it’s not zoomed to the door. The thing is I instructed the dealer not to touch the car. I brought it home with all the protective wraps. I took them off myself. I did a thorough wash and a spray wax since I planned on getting it paint corrected and coating out in.

when I dropped off the car and did a walk around, the Detailer noticed the paint mismatch on the door garnish piece... then I took it to the dealer(not where I bought it from since it’s 6hours away) and they had a field rep come look at it and said it’s normal...

Over the weekend, I did a single step polish and sealant to have something on the paint. And that paint defect sticks out even more now

Personally I wouldn’t apply any more products to the pint and escalate the demand for them to fix the issue. A new rep, or perhaps find another dealership with a black supra and do a side by side comparison and submit that. If you still get no results, tweet at Toyota’s twitter account with the pictures and post your experience

Yeah I will take it to another dealership. I have a good relationship with this one. It’s just inconvenient

I truly don’t mean to be a dick on this, but as someone in sales I think this needs to be said. You do not have the relationship you think you have. You need to make that clear to them that your future business is going elsewhere.

Their job is to make you feel like you have a good relationship. Relationships are two way streets and if they aren’t holding up their end, you don’t have a relationship. Their end is they should take care of things like this with Toyota and if Toyota doesn’t step up, cover it while they fight it because you are their customer. This looks easily winnable on warranty with dealer involvement. You shouldn’t have to wait anywhere near this long to be made right.

I know my local Toyota has to send parts out for paint. Coupled with delays in warranty payment, that is money out the door for them for a month or a quarter. If they won’t float that, they will certainly screw you later on something larger. You will either have to find another dealership or ask to escalate this through Toyota corporate.

Thanks for your input! I totally agree with what you said. I am going to call another dealer tomorrow and get this issue figured out

I think the other villain of this story is in general how none of us can seem to get a quality, thick, durable paint job from the factory in 2019 that is resilient despite this not being a cheap car per se. Factory paint these days seems to chip off easily and is thinly applied, wonder if that's the lack of oil based paint that's allowed or just good old fashioned cost cutting?

It is the water based paint. They are heavy on pigments and as they cannot cure properly if the coating is too thick. They just go on incredibly thin. To get one and half coats coverage with a low VOC, something had to give. What gave is paint thickness / durability.

Noticed it today while trying to get hard water spots out :(

I refinish for a living, I will likely be ripping these off and respraying.

If you have a launch edition, the mirrors are also see thru.

This is going to be the same across the board on ALL black models. Checked out another black one locally. It takes a certain lighting to see it. If your car is black; bend down and check. Guaranteed it’s the same. If you look at the quarter there are see through spots on the dogleg area as well.
Just awful.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having the same issue. I still can’t believe that the Toyota Field Tech deemed this issue Normal.

It works out better for you since you said you are in the field of respraying. I will be taking it in to another dealership next week in hopes to get this resolved. Is yours on both sides?? And you mentioned there is a same issue on the quarter and the red mirror caps?

In the pic I posted it looks like there are a few spots in the lower quarter, but let me get it to my shop and check it under some good lights before I say that for sure. It’s probably just the picture.

I just noticed the door garnish yesterday, and it’s the same on both sides. My guess is that all colors have the same issue and it’s just most apparent on the black. I’ll be on the look out when I come across other supras! I may even drive to a couple dealers and look.

I noticed the mirror cap about 2 weeks ago in direct sunlight. There are areas you can see through to black. The outer area with the 3 lines is where it is most apparent. Toyota should have done a better job on the finish all around, but the plastic parts are the worst. Nonetheless I still love the car.

This thread is actually a relief for me, because after reading it last night I went back out to check the other side and saw that it was see through as well. I was thinking my car had been scratched and repaired/repainted on the panel! Hopefully Toyota steps up and has all of these pieces refinished!
