More fun is objective..

I could have fun with power or agility, turning heads as in looks, maybe exhaust sound, pops & bangs, turbo whoosh's, SC whines, cam chops, rowing gears, steering feel... Etc

Depends on what "fun" is to you

86 to me is fun to drive on occasion, but I could never see myself in one, why? Because a car with good power will always be "fun" to me..

I am exactly like you and I dont really like convertibles. The wind aginst your face feels good and all but after driving 10 miles you just want to put the roof up and just push the car. So no convertible for me.
You're cross shopping the wrong car...

Convertible issues gone, plus you get a Sport Roof. 2019 car has more power now too, better power to weight then the 86 (better gas milage too, and no flat spot).

That's the problem with the new Supra for me. With the lack of rear seats and the tiny hatch, practicality is out the window and it's just a weekend car, so now it has to contend with a Miata in comparisons. As much as I would like something new in my garage with a Supra logo on it, the things the new Supra is good at, most of them the Miata is better at. The Supra has some wins for sure, but nothing that makes up for the extra $30k. I could get an 86 and an RF for the same money lol.

Man, as a drivers car, you can’t do any better than an 86. I had an FRS for 3 years and loved it. It had this rowdy kinda vintage feel to it. I might get another one at some point. But I see how the low power levels aren’t for everyone. The Supra has some amazing qualities and it’s a head turner. Just doesn’t have that same “connected” feel. I don’t think either is a bad choice.

yep. Same.

Owned a 86 for 3 years. My buddy and I swap cars now & then: his is a ‘19 Cayman S. The 86 handles and gives driver feedback like the Cayman; the Supra simply does not. I love the Supra and would take it any day over the 86, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t miss the special driving experience of the 86–low power and all.

Toyota has announced a 2nd gen 86 is in the works, likely built on a Toyota platform, with a Subaru 2.4L turbo boxer. No specs released from Toyota yet, but it is happening. I loved my FRS. Sounded great with a Nameless cat back, and had a smooth shifting MT that felt even better with a weighted shift knob. One important hit for me was that as soon as I put some nice 18s os to fill out wheel wells, it felt even slower . The added rotational mass was very noticeable, and the extra gip created additional roll at the limit (on track). Had I kept the car for regular track use, I would have had to add coilovers to match the added traction of the aftermarket tire/wheel package. Stiffer sway bars may have worked as a bandaide.

The only car that I could compare the steering and chassis to is a 911...

but the 911’s transmission sh*ts on the bmw one, but that’s Porsche for you..very precise.

Only cars i would get over the A90 are the m2 and the 911.

I had an manual M2 and totalled it. I had a supercharged civic Si track car 1800 lbs stripped. I track motorcycles as well. So I have a little bit of experience.

The A90 is a great car out of the box.

I have committed to doing 4 track days with only a brake fluid, pad and tire swap... MAYBE rims. Just wanna enjoy this car step by step.

I'll add my view. I own 86 with header, tune and shorter gearing (~220hp, 240nm, around 5.7s 0-60).

Supra is like a 911 Turbo S. Its fast, fun, well made, exclusive. More than enough for 95% of ppl.

86 is like 911 GT3. Clearly better steering, better sitting position, manual, better visibility, less body roll, less mass, instant throttle response (there is a turbo lag in a Supra, tiny, but still). Everything is sharper, more raw, more engageing. Ofc its much slower... But reducing from 4 to 3 to 2, clutch kick oversteer into corner... yeah, I have more fun in my 86 than I had in a Supra with much more power and luxury.
86 is a pure oldschool drivers car, there is no "Comfort" mode, everything is Sport+ 24/7. So you have to drive it that way, its a momentum car. 90% of ppl wont appreciate this since they want speed, but acceleration is getting old pretty fast + can get you in trouble easily. So if you are looking for that tiny bit, that extra drop of raw experience - its in 86 not in a Supra. Sure, 86 could have had 40hp more from the factory, probably would have been even better... but its not a must in my opinion.

On the other hand, I might get Supra next year anyway since I want something newer than my 86 that is already 7yrs old ;) Maybe new GR86, maybe Supra, maybe 2021 current 86, time will tell.

lag in the A90 Supra? Lol. There is no lag. I can tell you. It’s as instant as a blower.

Clearly he only has seat time in the 86..... having owned both and having a fair bit of seat time in each, I assure you that most of what he stated is untrue.

“Acceleration gets old” - something only an 86 owner would say lol

I drove it, a lot, yes there is a slight lag. Its nothing major, just a bit of delay. I notice this since I daily 86 and there is 0 delay, nothing. Even McLaren P1 is said to have bit of turbo lag.

You do realize that even if this non existent lag was real, the supras inline 6 would still have more pull than your 0 delay 86.... right?

A lot of what you just said is your opinion and not factual.

OP should listen to people who have owned both vehicles and have adequate seat time in both vehicles. The -only- reason to buy the 86 is cost and manual transmission. Nothing else about it is better.

Owned? I drove it a lot, I rented one for a loooong time coz wanted to buy it instantly when it came out but I waited. Drove it on the same twisty roads I drive 86. I dont need to own it for 6months, wtf arguemnt is that. By this logic you got 0 idea about 86.
So you deny that steering is better, with more feel, sharper in 86? Or maybe you deny that its 300kg lighter and it indeed feels lighter in hard cornering and its easy to notice? Be real.
Ye, it gets old for me. Accelerating on straight is booooring for me, cornering/drifting is where the fun is.

Ofc, its true. It kills 86 from any speed/any gear. 86 is like racing on a wheelchair vs Gatlin (Supra). I dont deny this. I only said about pure throttle response, nothing more. Imo Supra engine is MUCH MUCH better than in 86.

I can agree that for a beginner driver the 86 is the easier car to handle and have fun in.. I can’t agree with anything else.

I personally much prefer the supras steering, feel, comfort, etc. The 86 does feel more “raw” as you say, but if I want a raw feeling car I would buy an evo 8, not the 86. The supra is extremely comfortable and does 90% of what it does better than the 86. There is no denying that.
