An old friend recently gave me some insight and I will never purchase one.

I recently purchased an F250 that was almost out of factory warranty. The salesman was an old buddy of mine, and he kept pushing for the warranty despite me declining. Once I got home, I decided to ask him what the deal was with that, and he claims that selling the warranty is a large commission for them and the dealership. He also knows I’m mod-happy stated that if I had signed and bought the EXT warranty, the instant I changed the tires to 35-37” and put a leveling kit (or any other mods) on the truck they would have fully voided my extended warranty. He explained that since most of these are aftermarket and 3rd party warranties, the magnuson moss warranty act does not apply. What a “buddy” for trying to make me buy something he knew would be voided, right?

Even if the warranty was a good buy, I’m betting that the majority of us will not keep this car longer than it’s original warranty. I know I bounce from car to car often, I’ve never once had to use an extended warranty. I told the dealer I purchased my supra from that I did not want any additional costs over MSRP. When I got there, they had warranty papers and this and that all laid out on the desk. Told the manager not to waste his breath, if the paperwork didn’t reflect MSRP and MSRP only, I was walking. He didn’t waste any more of my time, lol.

The dealer telling you the car will break down and all of that is pretty shady, though! I would report that to Toyota, I’m sure they wouldn’t be thrilled about that!
^^^. I was like wtf?!! Never had somebody say that before. What’s even more shady was they left my tank with 1/4 tank upon picking her up. I was like, the window sticker says full tank of gas. He said their Toyota dealership doesn’t have prem gas and the Supra uses prem. I was like really man? . This is after they forgot to wash the car before we picked it up. There was bug stains on the front headlights/bumpers. Didn’t wash half of the rear bumper. All the plastic was taken off still had black residue lines. The rear sticker that I requested to be removed was still there. We had to wait another 2 hours for them to rewash the car.
I am attempting to contact their sales manager as we speak.

The dealership I purchased from let the salesman ride with me to a nearby gas station to fill up with premium. I don’t believe any dealership I’ve purchased from has in house fuel, besides powersports brands. Mine wasn’t washed either, but it had not been test driven so there were no bugs. I was fine with them not washing it because they probably would have scratched the black. I would have been upset if there was a sticker on the car, though! Mine came with telematics and nav not activated, I had to go to a more local dealer to have this done since I had purchased about 2 hours away.

I drove to Lafayette to get mine and they called their Supra technician in on a Saturday to activate and prep the car. From what I’ve seen from factory tags, Toyota doesn’t want the car to leave the lot without the activation.

Oh snap, another Louisiana Supra! We will have to get together soon! I ended up going to Opelousas because the dealer in Lafayette didn’t seem to know much about the car in general, but I was unable to speak with a supra guy there.

Sounds good! I agree that they knew little to nothing. The Texas dealers were not budging on price and were stingy on trade-in so I went east to Lafayette.

I am glad that my dealer never pressed on selling me an extended warranty. Out of all of my past vehicle purchases, Supra was the smoothest transaction I ever done. I found my LE from a help of fellow forum member here. I called the salesman and put my deposit down on the car. He called me when the car arrived at the dealer. I went the following week to pick it up. He had all of my paperwork ready and went in to finance to sign some papers. The finance manager offered me one warranty which was pretty appealing to me which was wheel and tire. It was a Toyota warranty and not a 3rd party. I knew I was going to get a set of aftermarket so ended up not getting it. He just offered it to me once and didn't ask again once I declined.

From my experience with Lexus extended warranty, it was worth the $1,800 I paid for. I bought the car used with 32,000 miles on it. It had 4k left on factory warranty. At the time, I got 5yr/75,000mi Lexus extended warranty. At 50k, I needed a new water pump and new axles and it was all covered by my extended warranty. If I didn't have it, it would have been a $3,000 service bill with parts and labor... On my Lexus, I got my money worth for sure

Mine was roughly $1200 out of pocket for 100k / 7 years b2b with no real restrictions. That price also includes wheels, tires, roadside, chips, and dents as well for 6 years on a separate plan. Given that I put 20k in miles a year on the car, it was a no brainer at that price. I don’t think I would have gotten it at a higher price.

Typically I don’t get warranties, but my worries are the typical BMW issues along with beating the tires and wheels to shit on Louisiana and Southwest Texas roads. I’ll probably get my money back on tires alone with all the construction here as I’ve already had one replaced.

Normally not having the dealer wash the car is a good thing! Most the time they cause more damage than good. Always seems to be some young kid washing the cars that doesn't really have any idea how to do a proper wash.

This. When I got my car serviced my SA actually asked if I wanted to have my car washed but also said she wouldn't recommend their wash.. I declined, appreciated her giving me a heads up though.

That was kind of her. We had a used lexus a few years ago that we would take in for service and specifically would say NO WASH on our comments. As someone that is super particular about auto detail and does paint correction as a side gig people just dont understand how much damage can be caused by a improper wash or dry. I've seen the young kids at dealerships drop their sponge or wash mitt on the ground, pick it back up and start washing again

Yeah, I always stipulated no wash with the old BMW, but not my last car which was a leased S4. Audi actually didn’t mess it up, although I never left a service without new scuffs on the steering wheel.

Generally, the customer pays Sales Tax on the purchase price of the warranty or service contract. When the customer takes the item to a repair shop, normally the customer is not billed. Ask the dealer if you pay in full will they tax it
Tax usually depends on what State the extended warranty is sold in. Extended warranties are actually insurance policies. Insurance policies are regulated by State. Some States are better than others. I seem to remember FL being a really bad state for consumer laws and extended warranty or insurance? I may be wrong but I don't think FL law allows for discounts on an extended warranty/ insurance policy? There are a few States that do not tax extended warranties and insurance. Definitely worth double checking.

I have the extended warranty on mine but i got mine for free. They added it on as a freebie since they messed up initially on my pricing and i had driven 4 hours to get the car.
