Model code designation? / Why do we use the A90 name for the 5th Gen Supra?

Do you think we should continue to use the a90 nomenclature even though our cars are not an A chas?

Yeah, it was at Bob Tyler Toyota in Pensacola. I was told that he was going to keep it, but then decided to sell it. That was, without a doubt, the worst new car buying experience I have ever had. My wife and I were at that dealership about 14 hours over a 3 day period trying to get that car bought, and home for good. Only one person at that place knows anything about that car (a service writer..had to have the car battery replaced,with7 miles on it). That is the first and last vehiclec I'll ever buy there. But, that is one heck of a vehicle.

Sorry to hear about the experience. Hope you call or write them about your bad experience. I’m three hours away from you and hope to have my Red LE soon. Shipping it from MN to Louisiana. Enjoy the car!

So I come from the world of Hondas and we normally use the chassis code located in the vin number. Eh, Eg, Dc, Ej and etc. Apparently the A90 doesn’t exist and the proper chassis code is “J29/DB”. Apparently “DB4” is included in my Vin number.
So is the A90 just basically made up?
Just curious bc I had several people ask me why I called it an A90. I said bc the forum said so. lol

Yes.

It makes zero sense, its just marketing mumbo jumbo because people refer to the old Supras by chassis code, A80, A70, A60 etc. Toyota is trying to draw a lineage connection to the old cars that doesn't actually exist.

Calling it the MK5 works much better. Or call it what actually is, J29.

It's not A90.

A40/A50, A60, A70, A80 have been the chassis code names for the previous Supra's. Since the MKV is a joint collaboration with BMW, it has only adopted the A90 chassis code. It's essentially J29 (Japan) and the Z4 is a G29 (German) variant

I use A90 here and there, but as said it is just marketing. Thing is, in Japan and some other areas (maybe EU) they refer to Supras by chassis code instead of Mark/MK designation, so the reason for the marketing is to associate the progression of the models to those markets.

Toyota official way to refer to the generation of Supras is by A40/A60/A70/A80.... which yes, the A chassis (RWD Celica originally) denotes the Supra platform.

A90 fits better than J29 - so while not a chassis code, it is still better than Mk1/2/3/4/5

hmmmm disagree, mk5 indicates the generation adequately and that it is a Supra, without relying on a non existent chassis code. I think most of us salty previous gen Supra owners can at least let you guys have that one, don't push it with that a90 crap though :p

yeaaa that was me. Everyone knows my stance on the car so I’ve decided to play nice and contribute substance to the forum with tech/dealer info.
I've been trying to try that!

Then I go and do shit like this...

Corrected.

Just to clarify for the OP, since thread some misinformation is starting to creep in. Neither J29 or A90 is on the VIN, Not sure how this was handled for the 86/BRZ, but it may be the result of these collaboration cars.

Personally, Mk1/2/3/4/5 seems a silly way to distinguish the car because it always has to be preceded by "Supra" since it is a generic term for car models/generations.

Thats true, but its not like everyone knows all the BMW codes either (and I bet you j29 is stamped somewhere on the car). BMW seems to share them across different models of the same generation a bit too. Look at the Z3's code for instance...

DB4 is in the vin, though not sure it actually denotes the product in any way.
