Anyone have insight as to why toyota went with the super sport vs 4s? When the mustang gt and ss, and a host of othet cars picked 4s...? The nee gt500 has sport cups. Ive had both and the 4s is better in every way... i dont get the decision here

GT350 originally came with SS, for MY20, they upgraded to SportCup2.
SS is a BMW rated tire. M2CC and M4 also comes with SS. I don't know the other reasons.

Info: On TireRack SS has a lot more reviews/ratings and is $50 more expensive than 4S, on the contrary 4S is rated a tad bit better.

interesting I wonder if thats because the SS has been out for that much longer and has accumulated that much more reviews. I find the SS lacking in this car. But the sidewalls are a little stiffer on the SS vs mp4s imo. So for all out handling...not sure if this would be an upgrade

Good question & will have to decide this as well once SS are worn. I went from SS to 4S on my C7 & lost track performance but gained wet street performance. The C7 SS were also special Corvette compound SS so I'm thinking it will be same for BMW SS. The stock SS will outperform 4S on track.

Thanks! I have since taken it on track another time & was still 5 sec slower. The 4S will last longer tho & is a better street tire. It also isn't as sensitive to cold temps & has grip immediately.

Have you tired lowering the tire pressure to 32psi? I did & think it helps but if you do you will have to reprogram computer by following steps in this video.

The Super Sport on the Supra is a bespoke composition, hence why it's a "Super Sport * ".The tire was developed with the G29/J29 Team during the car's development, prior to the release of the 4S. Just how the timing worked out really.

What's funny is that Toyota was putting their pre-production cars on Cup 2s because they couldn't get their hands on the OE Super Sport * soon after release. I had the white pre-pro Launch edition for a week on Cup 2s and it was glorious haha.

I love cup 2, they wear fast but when its good it amazing LOL

I heard a michelin guy on a youtube video saying that if you are really into handling then SS is better than 4s.

I've used cup 2's on previous car and must say that are superb tyres.
Is anyone running cup 2's on their supra and can comment?
Tia.

I used to have 4S on my 370Z - I definitely noticed improved grip when wet compared to other summer tires, and better cold weather performance too. Was totally worth it for Seattle area given how much rain we get (car was my daily driver).

I've noticed with my factory super sports that they need long time to warm up like 30 min + today at 45F.

Then they work and work excellently.

You'll get lots of squirrely slippage trying to accelerate smoothly with them on cold.

I recall my cup 2's did not suffer this slippage but then again this was in an awd car so totally different setup.
