I was comparing my evo 8 to the supra and to my surprise the supra weighs about 100 pounds over the evo 8. They are both fairly small cars, but the evo has all of the added weight of the awd system and iron block. Has anyone went into weight reduction mode and found any removable non essential items that are weighing this thing down? I am actually mind blown this car does not weigh less than the evo!

Battery, seats and exhaust all weight a lot. drag cars go to a lightweight battery, no passenger seat and no exhaust

You can replace the monster truck battery with lithium. There is an inch thick ccf insulation mat on the floor maybe could go as there are gaping holes in the sound insulation elsewhere. The rear tweeter and 4ā€ donā€™t do much, so a few more pounds there. Some misc. plastic here and there. You could also remove the woofers in the rear deck. Anything more than that and you will start pulling visible pieces out of the car (trim, seats, etc.).

Somewhere Akio stayed this car is one of the stiffest they made. I believe it was when he was talking about why they removed the engine bay struts they now have added back for 2021. Between the stiff chassis, additional safety features, luxuries, and all the engine accessory weight, it adds up.

That might make installing his kidā€™s car seat easier or more difficult depending how you look at it.

The Evo 8 came at a time before modern safety systems were a thing, and it's magnitudes less rigid and composed of merely thin stamped sheet metal. So even with that iron block and AWD system it wasn't super hard to make lightweight. Don't get me wrong though, I love all Evos aside from the maybe the X.

In that light, all of the Supra's contemporaries are heavy in general and in most cases heavier in comparison.

That said, drop the stock seats and you should lose at least 60lbs, battery from Titan can drop another 40lbs according to Adam LZ, and the 12 speaker array weighs quite a bit as well.

The Evo 8 basically is a bare bones econo car that didn't even have cruise control, so I can see it still weighing much less than the A90.

The MKV Supra has so many creature comforts, cruise control, sensors, lane assist, electronic seats, multimedia/speakers, battery, bigger engine, etc...

Like others have mentioned, replacing the battery, seats, sound deadening, and speaker system, along with lighter wheels and exhaust, you should be able to save a good amount in weight.

I had an X 'Final Edition', man I loved that car. Yeah it was porkier than the previous generations & you skipped second a lot in the Winter, & it droned on the highway due to no 6 speed, oh yeah the Recaro's didn't deploy airbags correctly on the sides or something (who cares about the small details, Transport Canada didn't! ) but man that thing was fun. The AWD system was wild, you could push that car so stupidly hard in most conditions and it would keep your ass on the road in a straight line.

Well, I guess it's one of those 'Did I make the right decision?' days ;)

The X had its good and bad points like anything, but it was still a decent car in manual IMO. I just disliked DCT, the added weight, and that it didn't have the 4G63.

The Final Edition was the one to have though despite the weird no Recaro thing.

I had a 2015 STI and it weighed about the same. Killer in snow though. Amazing.

I actually had both evo 8 and X at the same time. They made very similar power numbers, same turbo, similar cams.. Aside from comfort, the 8 was so much better in every way. For some reason the 8 would pull away from the X so hard. I still really enjoyed the X but my heart is with the 8.

I recently sold my '03 evo 8. It was the fifth evo I ever owned and by far the most fun to drive. It didn't have all the bells and whistles the later generations had, so you felt so much more in touch with the car and the road. No electronic throttle, steering, cruise, etc. And when you mashed the throttle it would punish your brain. But the MK5 will beat it any day, except on a rally course.

Iā€™ll have to respectfully disagree with the last statement. My evo 8 would have destroyed my mk5 in pretty much any situation. But that was also 15k+ into mods, and my mk5 is still stock in every way. Stock for stock, the mk5 is faster, so I donā€™t doubt the modding potential at all. I do think the evo 8 handles much better, but Iā€™ve owned way more AWD cars than RWD so their may be a slight bias there.

With that said, itā€™s hard to beat the Supra in terms of performance to comfort and features for the price. Itā€™s as convenient to drive as it is fun, for me at least! When it comes to a daily driver, this is the one area that no evo can come close to hanging, unless of course you always have a bunch of cargo or passengers.
