I think most likely the hasp (clamp, claw, whatever you call the latch thingy) partially closed and so it can't "grab" because it's already closed. I'd try the trunk open button on the remote, and if that doesn't work pull the emergency release a bit more and see if you can get it open. It should be locked in the open position until closed, but perhaps it wasn't pulled 100% open, and slipped shut.

I had a truck that would always do that with the tailgate... I'd have to hold the handle all the way out to close it again. I don't know where the actuator is in this, but you should be able to hold it down to "trick" the car into thinking the hatch is closed if the button doesn't work for that reason. The pull should be 100% mechanical however, so pulling it fully should resolve it unless it's actually broken.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I ended up taking it to the dealer at first they told me they'd have to completely dissemble the top of the trunk (where the emergency latch is) I was like wtf
.. then another sales advisor came and flipped the pull and pushed it against the black latch (most of you won't see this because you have to pull it to actually see it) and it stayed and although I'm sure it's still not 100% normal and fixed my trunk is closed and I no longer have the issue. So for now that'll have to do I guess lol. If you guys wouldn't mind attaching pictures of your security latches so I can compare mine? Thanks again guys!

So this emergency lever is in case somebody accident falls inside the trunk and gets locked in?
It is so you can’t kidnap kids in your sports car. We all know this has been a bigger threat than cargo vans with free candy spray painted on the side of them.

lmao. Hahahahahahahahahah. But the kids won’t go in a 2020!! They want to wait for the 2021 to be kidnapped so they can enjoy the extra 47 Hp so they won’t be inside the rear trunk for much longer.

You don’t want your kids in the back. They get to walk. The ride quality is terrible with the back weighed down.

they make that emergency release in case you get stuck inside a car after crash and doors wont open up. that is only good for skinny ass drivers to fit the space between the harness bar and dumb ass speaker box

As the title says I accidentally pulled the emergency trunk release and now my trunk will not close. Does anyone know exactly how to reset it? Looked in my manual, but found nothing about this :( any help is greatly appreciated.
Try calling the Toyota Customer Service 1-800 number (for me, it was Toyota Canada). My nav system was not properly updated by the dealer at delivery, and the customer service rep was able to diagnose the problem (after checking with their tech guys) and tell me exactly what the dealer needed to do. I was actually this agent’s first Supra caller. Customer service will not ignore you. Ask for the incident reference number. That gives you a hammer if you need to call back, or ask them to escalate the problem. Corporate Toyota doesn’t want dissatisfied customers, and will push the dealer to get it fixed. Worked for me!
