On the 4 cyl model:

-Is it open diff it doesn’t have an e diff?
-No adaptive suspension probably means very little if one plans to put the car on coils/springs right?
-At 42k ish, it seems like a bad value. The tech package with carplay etc will easily have you at mid 40s.

Personally I’d rather have the base I6 if the base 4cyl is really that close in price to the i6. Faster plus better supension/diff for only 7k more.

I can definitely see the 4cyl model selling to people who just putt around and don’t autocross/track their car etc. or only care about looks vs heritage.

For a premium ya not yet. Maybe for a base you might.
I think if you wait (maybe) by the end of this year, you could probably buy a used limited edition at $50k, maybe a little more. Now that the more powerful version is out, along with the 4 cylinders, I'm sure there will be some owners giving up the 1st releases.

My theory is based on some current factors lol. Here's an example of a local in the SF Bay Area already selling their premium edition at $57k. I'm sure you can get it for lower because seller hasn't stated "firm" price.

Hi Guys,

My first post here! Been reading a lot and Looking forward to learning a lot.

I had an Mk4 which i sadly had to let go , but now its looking like its time to get
back into the driver seat of a supra.

The 2019 and 2020 models are really well priced where I am (South Africa and they are demo models ) so those are really tempting me, but doing some research lately it seems the 2021 models which will be available from June will have a huge power increase.

Is it basically just software they have done to get those extra ponies or are there
hardware parts as well?

I'm toying with the idea of saving up a little more and waiting or going for the 2019/2020 and doing aftermarket software.

P.S I would probably do aftermarket software on a 2021 model as well, I guess iIm asking would the 2021 with software = 50 more hp than a 2020 with software.

"The increased output results from a slew of upgrades throughout the engine. The new dual-branch exhaust manifold, with six ports instead of two, improves heat management. A new piston design reduces the engine’s compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1.

The greatly revised engine produces higher torque at higher rpm and retains the eagerness to rev with turbine-like smoothness. Toyota projects that the new engine will reduce the Supra 3.0 model’s 0-60 acceleration time to 3.9 seconds, from 4.1. The 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters carries over for 2021."

Discussed in a thread here

Different engine not just software

Both will get similar hp and torque bumps from software. With that said, the 2021 will start 50 hp higher and with roughly equal peak torque. The difference is that the torque does not fall off as fast at the top end.

In most street driving, they will be close. Look up the car and driver m40i vs Supra review. The engine in the 2021 is what is in the m40i currently. If you track it or just must have the extra performance, get the 2021, it will be better. The 2020 will be cheaper, so at the end of the day, you will have to decide if the extra performance is worth the price difference as 2020s should consistently be 3-5k off the 2021 price, maybe more.

With either choice, if you tune and DP, the additional torque will necessitate an investment on new tires and possibly wheels.

Not just 50hp, 50rwhp**. Thats a lot.. thats close to 80 crank. The 2020 Supra vs the 2021 is not going to be close especially with it being almost 2.5 seconds faster 0-130. That MASSIVE. I recommend anyone looking to get a supra completely go past 2020 and wait for 2021.

20?? GR Supra ??? Edition
Even though the 2020 Supra might have better incentives I would suggest waiting for the 2021. Toyota has improved the platform enough that it warrants holding off on the previous model.

That software flash would be a better investment for the A61 in my opinion.

Yeah, but he desires to tune either purchase. Like I mentioned, unless he is tracking it or needs to be absolutely balls to the wall, the savings may be worthwhile to him. I feel like he is the only one who can make that call. A tune does wonders for performance and a tune and DP has people complaining they cannot put the power down without dropping more money. Adding more hp does not make that any easier or cheaper.

This boils down to how much money he wants to invest in the platform. He already mentioned having to save up more, so what works for you may not work for him.

I’m not saying the 2020 is better than the 2021 as in pure performance, it is not. What I am saying is depending on the circumstances, it may be the better fit for some.

Personally if I was looking to buy now, I’d get a 2021. My finances may be different than his though. One size does not fit all.

I would wait another 5 years. It is bound to be better then and you can spend those 5 years reading about what other people are doing with the current Supra or what ever year you are reading about.
