I figured this would be a great way to introduce my self on this forum. My name is Marin and I am the calibrator for GoodSpeed performance in Scottsdale Arizona. I picked up a Supra for testing recently and have made 600+ dyno pulls at this point and have tons of data that I have collected! So one evening when I was testing something on the dyno I decided to swap back in my stock filter and do a back to back test. Both dyno pulls were made with the same car, same tune, same tank of gas.

Procedure
I waited at least ten minutes prior to doing a pull. In this exact case I ran two pulls with the HKS filter in place. The time between the pulls was 13 minutes. The car was kept idling with my main blower fan blowing on the car. After I made the HKS drop in pull I swapped in my stock filter. The next pull was made 33 minutes later. The hood was open during this entire process.

Air filter condition
Each filter had roughly 2,500 miles on them at this time. Neither were new but both had had over a hundred dyno pulls on them.

Testing Equiptment
We use a Maha LPS Dyno. These have a reptuation of being one of the more accurate dynos on the market. If I recall we were told it should be accurate within 0.1HP up to 1,000HP. This dyno also has the capability to power the car on decel and caulcate an estimate of drivetrain loss. This is an excelent piece of equiptment with extremely accurate back to back power numbers. All numbers I post are SAE corrected. My elevation is 1,500 FT. And my barometric pressure averages ~95 KPa. I typically leave my weather station info in on my offical dyno plots (but not on the screnshots lik below). When reading our dyno plots the red value is SAE corrected and the blue is the raw value recorded by the dyno. If we run a drivetrain loss test you will see a green value as well.

Vehicle Modifications
At this time this car was running:
  • AMS Downpipe
  • HKS Drop in filter
  • Custom EcuTek Tuning by my self
  • E54 fuel
  • Stock Catback
  • Stock airbox
  • Stock heat exchanger

Results
During this test at our peak power level we saw an gain of 7.23WHP and 8.0WTQ at peak power (5,000RPM). and 11.49WHP and 9.6WTQ at the end of the point. Check out the plots below!

I love being able to test these sort of gains and have been known to test this sort of stuff out on other platforms and look forward to testing more stuff like this in the future! I know this one was rather basic and expected but it is nice when you can actually see proof of it working vs just assuing it works.

Thanks for sharing Marin. It looks like once the engine is tuned to where the airflow requirements go up, there's definitely a bit of power to be had with the HKS drop-in.

It would be good to know how efficiently it actually filters. I see HKS is still making their "mushroom" filter. I don't know if they have improved the filter media but I remember years ago when they introduced it. Probably the worst job of actual filtration of any filter ever made with the possible exception of the Edelbrock Pro Flow triangular model.
