Probably not because even Toyota folks are saying they are keeping the same formula and trying to not make any drastic changes. Time will tell..
But something gotta change for sure , at the moment the mx5 with 184hp and its impressive low weight is way faster than the current 86. I mean they need to least make a car that is faster than that and in my opinion be at the heels of the 2 liter supra .

Our source has sent us a photo from an internal presentation proving he knows what he’s talking about, but for obvious reasons, we can’t share it here.

First up, the second-generation 86 that has been confirmed by Toyota and Subaru as another sports car tie-up is reportedly scheduled to come out in July 2021 and go on sale as a 2022MY. That’s all the info he has on the rear-wheel-drive coupe, but the latest intel suggests it’ll be sold as a “GR 86” with around 255 turbocharged horses and an improved interior with better materials.
It's leaks like this that keeps me interested haha. Good to know a more defined time table, but I think we already knew it was coming next year. HP estimates seem promising, @A70TTR idk if what you've been hearing is a bit different?

Promising GR86 news in that article so far.

Also... a “significantly lower priced” and non-luxury “serious off-roader” 5-seat-only Land Cruiser on the way? That’s also promising news. The current generation Land Cruiser for the U.S. is WAY too big and way too much of a luxury barge. Nothing remotely like the appeal of the FJ80’s, FJ Cruiser or FJ70’s.

It's good to see the leaked photo Motor1 reported a month ago, but I don't think this changes much. Jalopnik and other journalist are "confirming" 255 HP, however the 2.0L MKV was just unveiled with basically the same HP. Might as well just get the GR86 because of the manual.

Still more questions, but we'll see how this works out. Got plenty of time from now until the reveal.

There's higher chance now that the BRZ mule that was spotted awhile ago is a prototype for the 2nd gen 86/BRZ.

If they are going to turbocharged the 86/BRZ, wouldn't it make more sense to use the FA20DIT in the WRX as a starting point rather than the FA24 turbo, since it's already a performance oriented engine hence requiring far fewer changes to make it suite the 86/BRZ. This is the main reason why I don't buy into that rumour.

IMO they should offer both NA and turbo versions for this 2nd generation. I wonder if they can make the 2nd gen 86 and BRZ lighter than the current gen.

[...]
So far, "Best Car" magazine has reported that the next model announcement of 86/BRZ will be announced next year 2021, but there is information that the plan seems to be pushed ahead for about half a year.

As early as March 2021, the next model will be switched. That is, the end of the order means that the countdown to the next model has begun.

[...]

In this magazine's own scoop, the design has already been found, and it has been confirmed that it has been repeatedly tested in the Nürburgring, Germany, the holy site of the vehicle development test.

[...]

However, it is said that the engine and the transmission system evolve greatly. The performance improvement by it is natural, and the improvement of the safety by adopting the evolution version eye sight is also essential as Subaru.

The engine will be changed from the current 2L and FA20 to the 2.4L FA24, with power from 207ps to 220ps and torque from 21.6kgm to 24.5kgm.

[...]

Of course, the six-speed MT manufactured by Aisin AW is available, but the demand for AT is increasing not only in North America, which is a large market, but also globally, and the importance of torque characteristics has helped to scale up the engine. In other words, sports cars that everyone can enjoy are also the theme of the next 86/BRZ.

In terms of size, it is said that the total length is 4250 × total width 1780 × total height 1315mm, the wheelbase does not change at 2570mm.

As sports cars around the world move to high performance, high prices, and are becoming out of reach, and high safety and environmental performance are required, the existence of the next 86/BRZ will be sent out to the world as a treasure of Japan.

As mentioned above, the debut time is around March 2021 at the earliest. [...] This information was interviewed as of April 2020. There is also the possibility that it will be knocked down by the influence of corona virus and other circumstances. In that case, we will continue to provide you with the latest information on this site.
If their information is right, we are looking at March instead of October/November time frame (as mentioned before).
And to be fair, sources told me months ago to expect something between 165 and 175 kW due to increased torque (240 Nm), but BestCar reports 162 kW (and yes, no turbo).
On the other hand this puts the GR 86/BRZ2 slightly under the 2.0 Supra - which was to be expected.

if they actually do what is being suggested by the japanese media ( 2.4 NA ) , they will have to sell the car only to north america. The 2.4 is above the 2liter mark that most countries tax , second is that this engine is very polluting ( NA and turbo engines have about the same co2 numbers ) and third for 10 freaking hp they might as well stick witht he same engine.

If it hasn't 8 or more cylinders , just turbocharge it. There is a good reason that all the toyota, nissan modern cars that are remembered even today were turbocharged.
