Living in California I would hang onto it. Eventually it's going to have to go back on unless you're transforming your car into a pure off road.

^^ I second this. Though it is cumbersome, it would be best to hang onto it. You may have more trouble trying to find one later down the road when you need it

They're both right and wrong. In California, a brand new car has 8 years before it is required to be smogged if it is still with the original owner. It is 4 years or older if you sell the car. However, if you ever get a state ref, you will not pass without the stock cat. Because of that, I agree with them and would personally would just hang on to it, personally.

Has anyone EVER heard of someone's warranty being denied or voided because of a catted DP? I'm getting nervous about installing this.
