The only thing we really know about what the Supra and BMW sports car will be sharing is some kind of shared platform but what about everything else - engine, suspension, tranmission, driving aids, technology, styling?

Personally I just want BMW's carbon fiber chassis and maybe suspension since they seem to do sporty + compliant ride well.

Definitely want their CF technology but nothing else, especially ENGINE! They'd be bastardizing the Supra name if they stick any BMW drivetrain in a Toyota. Or please name it something other than Supra.

Yea I know my car has a Subaru engine, but the FR-S is a new model and Toyota has some stake in Subaru. With the Supra we're talking about a car with a heritage already.

Sounds like they're co-developing a modular platform, not a modular car, or co-powertrain, etc.

The original press release announcing the joint sports car platform partnership mentioned collaboration on fuel cells, vehicle electrification and lightweight materials though. Sounds like the two cars might share more than just a platform and propulsion might be one of them? Hope not.

Link? I must've missed that.

Are we sure this is the collaboration for a jointly developed sports car?

Unfortunately that's one potential drawback when you collaborate but you take the good with the bad sometimes. They both stand to save millions like this and maybe their respective sports cars would not have been possible otherwise (at least with each other's areas of expertise). But It would be a shame to see Toyota reliability drop from this joint venture.

As far as we know right now t's just a platform that's being developed and engineered together.

If you told me that BMW will be manufacturing the Toyota Supra too then yea I'd agree it might have the reliability of a BMW instead of a Toyota. But until we hear that's the case, I hope Toyota will make the car themselves and not outsource it. Would be soooo weird to have the Supra made by and shipped from BMW.

Bmw outsources to other economical countries.

My no 1 rule when buying a vehicle is that the vehicle has to be made in the country of origin. If Japanese, I look for a vin number that starts with J. I won't buy anything that's outsourced to another countries plants where some smart PM decides to save pennies by trying to get smarter than the specifications and think he can still provide the goods!

I learned my lesson the hard way when I found out my Audi was made in Hungary! Not saying Hungary is bad, I'm saying in my experience outsourcing results in lower quality and lower standards from the original design specifications; if you are starting point is already very high quality.

To be fair I don't know of a single manufacturer that doesn't outsource. It's not like Japan is a cost leader for labor or materials. Outsourcing can lead to poor quality but it doesn't always have to be. Look at Apple products, they are some of the best built electronics devices ever made and almost all the parts are made and assembled in China. I'd love to have them build 100% of it in Japan right in its own factories but if it means a car that costs even 10-20% more I'm not sure it is worth it.

Only thing from BMW I would like to see is the carbon fiber chassis. Everything else should be in house TOYOTA.

I think that's what most of us are hoping for.

But certain plants and factories are definitely known to be better quality than others within the same company. I agree with the owners that would prefer their Japanese and German cars to be built in the home country though. Just seems more genuine, even tho I know the quality at plants outside the home country may be just as good.

OK sharing chassis and the dual clutch transmission which is damn good in the newest M cars.
