A90 Supra life cycle: Incremental updates? New variants coming? What's next?

I think the Supra is a great car on its own
Some more performance oriented models would be nice but it should be a better car unlike how Renault did with the A110S

Given how much Toyota has been investing in solid state battery technology and the incremental progress with super-capacitors and their longstanding work with hybrids the silver lining with an A100 or even A110 might actually be Toyota coming back to their own in-house drivetrain technology once again. Just so long as they don't make it an autonomous blob that isn't rewarding to drive like the A90.

I'll bet that realistically given the current state of electric technology an A100 Supra will be an advanced performance hybrid of some kind. But it SHOULD be kept as a highly agile and balanced RWD only coupe like the A70, A80 and A90. With the combustion engine of it still co-powering the drive wheels and using a stout closed deck block. That would allow for familiar tuning to occur.

Once any future Supra goes full EV (A110?) then it *still* should be a rear-drive agile coupe but power tuning will probably be more difficult since OEM EV drive motors and batteries generally don't have reserves of unused horsepower waiting to be tuned in.... unless the manufacturer plans on a max power level ahead of time for the customer to "unlock" the way Tesla tends to do. If Toyota takes a production future full performance EV Supra that route (IE: tuning for more power via paywall)... then no bueno. But I doubt even Toyota has decided anywhere near that far yet for future Supras.

With the current updates they're slowly squandering their window to release *any* production manual variant at all since after the A90 there will be NO chance of that ever even being a possibility (Yeah, I know... the horse is right here next to me...) but I do hope the GRMN turns out to be something truly special also.

Late production A90 variants possibly getting some 48V Mild Hybrid system doesn't strike me as odd. After all the rumor as of a couple of days ago is that BMW is going to end sale of the current M2 Competition and M2 CS for the European markets after this year due to ever tightening emissions constraints. The rest of the world will continue to get the current M2 models. Presumably for the next-gen RWD 2-Series and its M-variant there will be hybrid technology introduced.

Certainly a next-gen A100 being hybrid from the start is a something I figured would happen. Maybe at that point it will once again be a Toyota in-house project since it would be a showcase of the technology they've been investing in so heavily? The question then is how they're going to implement that technology. Even if the drivetrain changes a Supra still has to feel and drive like a Supra driver's machine.... that *you* drive yourself.

We're talking about what the next A90 generation Supra model should be, right?

--Any edition at all with a manual transmission. Preferably the 3.0L but really... any A90 in left hand drive with a manual. Any. And of course the same for all RHD markets is a given.

--Whatever Tada and co want the ultimate GRMN edition to be.

--A special braking package option for the 2.0L models that upgrades them to the 3.0L front brake calipers and rotors.

--Some edition with a wing like the one pictured a few posts back.

--An edition (GRMN?) with a functional and effective active aero system both above the bumper and underneath the car.

--An edition with non-powered seats (Recaros preferably) that are much lighter than the current fully powered seats.

--Better styled wheels on every single Supra A90 from the 2.0L to 3.0L to the GRMN. Classic five-spokes would be fantastic!

--A far better styled three-spoke steering wheel befitting a proper sportscar on ALL editions of the A90 from this point on. Seriously, the Supra MKIV 1998-2002 style three-spoke steering wheel I have in my Lexus looks worlds better than the current A90's steering wheel.

All of the above points are things that could be applied to any standard or uplevel Supra A90 trims. But I think they're all valid things to mention.

Okay, yes. That’s what I meant also: What variations do we want to appear in the next (2022+) A90 model year(s).

The next Supra will have to compete with the 400Z, which is rumored to produce at least 400hp. Traditionally, the Z cars have put out dismal torque numbers but if that changes in 2022, the Supra will have to up the ante to compete.

  • New software update to i-Drive (or whatever Toyota's version is called)
  • Android Auto?
  • 400+ HP
  • New trim/upholstery interior choices (something other than just black)
  • More tuning of electronic steering + active diff + adaptive Suspension
  • Manual Gearbox for 2.0 (probably too early but who knows)
