I have no idea why anyone would buy an 86 lol. Never appealed to me.
The Supra is plenty fast. That's my point. Because it has the auto. What's a faster 2 seater coupe than it for $50k?
Um... people buy an 86 6MT because it's fun to drive with a stick shift. Oh, and despite its size it does have a modestly practical back seat and a trunk. Do most wish it had 250hp and 200 ft-lbs of torque via a turbo? Of course they do. But it's still a fun little driftable RWD sports car with excellent handling and a fair amount of aftermarket support.

The A90 Supra 2.0 and of course 3.0 are faster but that becomes a different kind of sports car.... which is fun for sure but not the same kind of fun that even the much slower 86 6MT is. Not to mention you are not going to be calling an A90 even remotely "practical" with it being a two-seater. It doesn't need to be a 2+2 like the 86 anyway and its chassis is great.

There are several reasons someone might gravitate to an 86 6MT (or even an upcoming Corolla GRMN AWD Turbo 6MT 5-door hatchback) over an A90 Supra but comparing both the 86 and A90 just in terms of speed alone is missing the point of both to me.

My 2JZGTE manual car is reasonably powerful and modestly "fast" by today's standards but I really don't care about what is wildly faster than it today. I'm too busy having fun driving it to my own private satisfaction. Because it has a manual transmission it is an inherently slower car than any new or new-ish sports car or muscle car with a modern lightning fast automatic or DCT but that makes no difference to me.

Driving fun is more important to me than outright speed or outright acceleration numbers. And a manual transmission simply is that in every situation. It doesn't need to be a thing in *every* car of course but I strongly prefer it personally.

I still greatly prefer the experience and fun of operating any manual car over any automatic in a gas engine vehicle other than perhaps a box truck. I'll change my tune on that once everything is full electric and the transmissions are all 1-speed reduction gear or automated 2-3 speed electronically shifted boxes.

So yes... the fact that the A90 has no manual, despite having a night and day faster driveline in any trim level with a far more broad torque and power curve than the little NA FA20 could ever provide does still make me gravitate towards the 86 6MT (or upcoming gen2 GR86 6MT or Corolla GRMN 6MT). OR... maybe another manufacturer's manual transmission car offering altogether.

No denying the Supra 3.0 with its ZF8-8HP is an exceptional performance bargain with fantastic 0-60 acceleration at $52k-$60k MSRP. It just doesn't matter to me if it has no manual edition and when I can actually get a manual transmission in another model for as long as new manual cars are still offered.

Like I've said before, 2022 is gonna be the year for the MKV. If Toyota plays this right with a manual option....it will be the perfect sports car of its time.

I hope you're right. The only problem with that is if it is not model year 2022 but actual year 2022 (meaning a 2023 model) for such an offering that means there would only be three production years left in the A90 before it is retired. Here's hoping your prediction comes true for model year 2022 so that there can be at least four model years of Supra A90 manuals.

Sidenote: how much better would the current STI perform if it had a DCT? I've always said it should have had an option to. The next gen STI doesn't need 400 horsepower. It needs a DCT or the ZF auto. That will do much more for it. If Subaru doesn't offer one, they're batshit crazy. If they put in the WRX CVT, all hope is lost.
I bought a new STI in 2019 and for the same money I could have purchased a more powerful, faster, and more fuel efficient sports car. I didnā€™t simply because those other cars didnā€™t offer a manual setup that could take serious abuse. Again, this was what I was looking for because I do have plans to build the car with serious power and need a capable drivetrain. However, I can confidently tell you that every STI owner I know would not buy another STI if it didnā€™t come in a manual....itā€™s why Subaru never made an automatic for the STI. The C8ā€™s case, I believe, really comes down to cost of a mid-rear manual transmission. If you havenā€™t already researched the cost between a front-engine manual transmission vs. a mid-rear engine manual transmission....check it out. Chevy didnā€™t drop the manual on the C8 because no one wants a manual, itā€™s because the C8 would end up being a $100k base car because of a complex mid-rear manual setup. Ford just put a manual in their upcoming Bronco (a very stout Getrag btw ), which is also rumored to go into the GT500 in the future. The stick could be making a comeback!

I bought a new one in 2015. And although a great transmission, a DCT would make it quicker/better. #becauserally doesn't apply because they use sequential boxes which in essence are DCT but you pull a lever instead of a paddle.

It's quite possible as it looks like the 2021MY M3 and M4 will be getting a manual with the S58 motor...

This is why my fiancĆ© and I are waiting tilā€™ 2022 to get her a MKV. She wants a MKV regardless, but if a manual option will be available....weā€™ll hold off until then.

Different engine though
True, but if I recall (and someone can correct me) most M transmissions have a cross-compatible bell-housing...not a completely different transmission which would be costly. BMW is notorious for doing this on their cars (i.e., SMG to 6spd bell-housing, etc...). Assuming that would be the case, all they would need is a B52 bolt pattern bell housing for the MKV.

Btw, I read that BMW sales are seriously declining, and BMW is working hard to do other joint ventures with other manufacturers to keep production running. Assuming this is true, I am betting BMW wouldnā€™t make much of a stink about a M trans in the MKV. Just something to consider....:)

That'd be great news

Seems like its confirmed now that the M3 + M4 will have manual options. Wonder if we'll start seeing leaks later this year of a 2022 Supra with a stick shift ... *crosses fingers*

S58 Supra with a 6 Speed? Excuse me while I have a little chat with the Universe
To keep costs down, I donā€™t see them using a S58....but anything is possible. I would love to see a S engine in a MKV.

Not a sports car, but I was very happy to see that the 2021 Ford Bronco is available with a 7-speed manual transmission. Perhaps there is still some hope.
