Toyota FT-1 concept & A90 Supra design dissected

Do you care if the next Supra has a "corporate image?"

  • No, as long as it looks good, I don't care if the rest of Toyota's line up is designed around it.

  • Yes, the Supra should be completely unique looking even among Toyota's fleet.

Concept or not what would it be other than cooling purposes? Every car, esp a sports car, needs cooling for the brakes, engine, etc.

I duno, turbines to charge a hybrid powertrain... directing wind through and under the car for better aero? Just a few thoughts.

Regardless the brakes/engine need to be cooled somewhow and the positioning means it serves a cooling effect. I would not rule out some dual purpose but this is all just guesswork on a concept. The studio was not confined to anything mocked up by engineers.

News is slow but a spy photo/concept could pop up when unexpected so let's talk about what your Likes and dislikes of the Ft-1 concept?

What would you change?

Downsize it and tone everything down by 25%. It's time to move from pure Calty design to something that the engineers (and yes some of the bean counters) have some input into. Since the FT-1 concept is not for sale I want to see what I could possibly buy.

As for design changes, I would reconstruct the front clip. The nose has that cool F1 thing going for it but it is in need of minor rhinoplasty IMO.

The bean counters are going to take a hacksaw to this concept no matter what. Let's not encourage them

A lot of the flares etc. IMO need to be made functional (e.g. front and rear bumper faux-canards).

Don't really care about it being 2+2, wouldn't mind seeing those seats go, but I also wouldn't mind having them either.

Really that's it though. Love everything about this car.

I just wanna see a slightly reworked front end. Lose the big fans and other parts that we know are not making it to production. Size it down too (10% smaller is what we've been hearing?).

That's the figure everyone's been quoting. But the current size is fine by me already so either way is cool. Concept styling is pretty much perfect but I expect it to get a major toning down. Just please keep the designers of the Mirai hydrogen car away from this beauty. Just let the CALTY team revise it for production please.

I actually love it's diversity. If they rework the nose, it'll be just a rendition of every other sport car.

I think it needs to be a trend setter, which typically takes people a while to grow use to it.

It has the F1/Enzo hints, which makes it look like the biz! Soften it up, and you grow tired of it and it'll be outdated in a few years. To stay ahead of fad and trends, you have to create your own style. And sometimes what may appear as ugly to some is actually very refreshing, timeless and beautiful.

I definitely see some Enzo and F1 in the nose, but i'd expect that to be the part that changes the most. It'll definitely be the most controversial and like it or not companies tend to design for the mainstream. That's not so much my preference as I just wanna see a concept that gives us a realistic idea of what could be made.

I also don't think a "safer" design would be a deal breaker necessarily. the MKIV Supra was not a daring design by any means and looking back i'd call it pretty classic. Not the risk-taker the FT-1 design is...

I think it needs to be a trend setter too. Go big and bold on the styling and keep the concept styling AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! There's so much good competition now in the segment where the car will compete so you have to stand out and offer up something that all the others don't. And it won't be a cheap car so at those prices it'll be a very emotional purchase for me as it will be for others, and great design like the concept can get people's emotions going.

+1

If Toyota wants their car to be noticed, to make magazine covers, to be really groundbreaking, they will keep the dramatic styling.

The Enzo is a great example, tons of Ferrari guys hated it but it's aged incredibly well and still stands out while its contemporaries have not.

I think regardless of design, if Toyota gives us a lightweight, big power performer it will be well received. Risky or safe, exciting or bland, if the car is quick it will sell well.

Just look at the GT-R. As much as I love the GT-R, it's not exactly a looker. Really none of the GT-R's have the traditional good sportscar looks IMO, but they're well regarded.

I'd prefer they take the risk, give us something that a lot of people might consider ugly, so that it will stand apart for years to come.
