Hi all,
First post here, took delivery of my 2020 Premium 3.0 Tungsten last month, love it. I have a question on the tire settings with the stock rims/tires from the factory. I have the stock rims/tires, however in the tire settings, mine is set to manual and whenever I attempt to set it to automatic, the tire recognition process fails. I'll then receive the error message, "tires not recognized" in both the dash and touchscreen when I start the car. After I close the error screen it sets the setting back to manual.

For those still with stock wheel/tire setup, are your tire settings set to automatic?

I brought to dealer and showed them the error. They took the car for a couple of hours and informed me afterwards that they cleared the error. But when i got the car back, I saw that it was still set to manual and not automatic. Before I return back and complain the problem again, I want to make sure that automatic is the proper setting.

I do still get the tire pressure/tire temperature readings reported and it appears to know when the pressure is low after i intentionally lowered it 6psi. But still, I'd like to know that the system is working appropriately from the beginning and if its supposed to be automatically recognizing my tires, I would like it to do so.

Thanks in advance,
J

Automatic. Stock wheels and tires. Never touched that menu.

Iā€™m having that same problem right now after putting new tires on stock wheels and it actually makes my stability control freak out in a hard turn. Iā€™m working on it with someone Iā€™ll let you know if I find anything out.

Thanks for everyone's input, much appreciated. I've made an appointment to bring it back to get looked at again.

I just switched to AS tires for the winter and I am now getting the tires not recognized message. I will play with It on manual and see if it can be reset to automatic once it recognizes the tires.

In the picture Tsar posted, can you see the verbiage speaking to your tires needing a QR code to be recognized? Do your tires have that QR code on the sidewall? I know they should if it's a brand new car, but still worth checking that first. Freaking overcomplicated electronics on cars these days. ugh.

I don't know. They are Goodyear Eagle Exhilarations (new name for the old F1ā€™s). If the QR code is on the interior sidewall I wonā€™t be able to see it now. I will call Goodyear and ask. thanks

UPDATE: went back thru the menu, selected manual because the Goodyears do not have the QR code on the side wall. Then picked winter tires and it gave me some 18ā€ & 19ā€ sizes which did not match (the car thinks I am smart and would buy narrower profile tires for the snow like I should), so I selected ā€œspecialā€ and then it took several miles to learn the PSI and temps. All good, just a maze of choices to pick from. And the QR codeā€™s is a BMW thing, and now Audi and Volvo as well.

After reading that story at the link posted it sounds like more regulations driving complexity and cost as usual. People wonder why shit is expensive.

It all goes back to the Bronco II rollover problems when there was a catastrophic tire failure 20+ years ago. Thatā€™s when tire safety became a big deal.

Sorry all for not following up with this post. So I did take the car back to the dealer for a total of 3 separate times just to address this issue of "Tires not Recognized". In the end, the service technician advised and documented on my service record the following,

"... Called [Toyota Corporate TAS Case# XXXXXXXXX]. Spoke with Supra Engineers and was informed Auto Mode is not intended for Driver Use. Manual Mode is default. Error is stated to be normal characteristic of Auto Mode when not being used for shop calibration..."

Essentially, they explained that I should leave it in Manual mode and that I, as the driver (user) should not be using the Automatic mode as that mode is reserved for service techs or calibration such as by a tire shop. (???) I don't necessarily believe that, but at the same time I don't have anything to backup my opinion and challenge their assertion. After all, they're Toyota and should know. Does this sound right to you all?

I explained that I had posted online regarding this issue and that other Supra owners reported that their settings allowed for automatic recognition. But the service technician could only go by the superiors (Supra Engineers) explanation. Please let me know if there is any documented evidence out there that would refute their explanation and show that the automatic mode should work for the user and not just for service use by technicians. Otherwise, I guess I will have to accept the Toyota service explanation. It doesn't necessarily have any negative effect for me in driving the car. For me, I just want to be assured that the systems are working as intended. Thanks everyone!!

Are you sure they actually opened a case? I suspect they are BS'ing you. My automatic recognition works fine. I guess it's up to you how far you want to pursue this. You can :

1. go to a new dealer with the complaint and see if they can fix it
2. forget about it. You said it seemed to recognize low psi in your tires
3. get a fellow Supra owner to swap tires with you that doesn't have the problem and see if the problem goes away

Good luck

So I just went out to confirm I wasnā€™t misremembering things. My automatic works fine so according to your dealer and toyota engineer mine isnā€™t working as designed.
To emphasize I confirmed : I was in automatic, select the start tire recognition button. The system then tells me to drive off to finish the process. As I start driving a % complete number comes up on the center stack and updates as I drive. I drove maybe 1/4 mile before it completed.
I donā€™t think you answered before, do your tires have a QR code on the sidewall?
